QUINCY, IL---The Quincy University men's basketball team won 73-69 on Thursday (Jan 6) night in Pepsi Arena.
It was the fourth consecutive game that was decided by four or less points for the Quincy Hawks, and third game in the last five days.
Quincy was able to limit one of the nation's top offenses, and hand Southwest Baptist (9-2, 3-1 GLVC) just its second loss.
Silas Crisler scored the first basket about two minutes into the game to give QU a 3-0 lead with 18:05 left in the first half.
Quincy then didn't take back the lead until
Jalen Stamps scored a layup with 9:15 left in the first half to make the score 16-14 QU.
QU held on to the lead the rest of the frame, and led 31-25 at halftime after Stamps knocked down a 3-pointer with five seconds in the period.
QU controlled a two possession lead the entire second half until Quinn Nelson converted a three point play for SBU to make it just a 49-48 Hawk lead with 10:01 left in the second half.
SBU made it a 1-point game again after scoring a layup with 4:27 left but QU still held on to a 57-56 lead.
Charles Callier then came up with a huge steal moments later and then converted on a layup to put QU up 59-56 with 3:33 left in the second half.
SBU continued to stay in the game, tying the score 23 seconds later on a 3-point shot at 59-59 with 3:10 left in the second half.
QU held on to a one possession lead until Callier splashed a 3-pointer from the far corner with 1:51 left in the second half to give QU a four point lead at 65-61. This was the final field goal QU needed in the game as they closed out the contest making enough foul shots to secure the win.
Callier scored three of the final four field goals for QU including one fast break layup off a steal, and two huge three pointers in the corner. Callier finished the game with eight points, all which came down the stretch in the second half.
The other Hawk field goal down the stretch was a massive 3-point play by Mark Bradshaw Jr who drove the ball inside and got fouled, and made the shot to give QU at 62-59 lead with 2:40 left in the second half.
QU had 7 different players score six or more points paced by
Jamaurie Coakley who had 13. Mark Bradshaw Jr added 10 points and
Silas Crisler had 10 points as well.
