QUINCY, IL---The Quincy University women's basketball team fell 73-59 to the Missouri S&T Miners in a GLVC matchup on Monday (Jan 17) evening.
The Hawks scored the first points of the game, gaining a 2-0 lead off two free throws by Sarah Nelson 55 seconds into the first quarter. They later regained the lead on a jumper from Emma Knipe with 8:10 remaining, and they kept the lead for the remainder of the quarter, with the score at the buzzer being 18-13 Hawks.
The Hawks valiantly defended their lead at the start of the second quarter, with a three-pointer from Regan Laconte making it 21-17 with 8:27 remaining. However, this was their last basket scored before losing the lead. A hook shot by Nelson tied the game at 28 with 4:17 remaining, and a three-pointer from Beth Matas Martin tied it again at 31 with 2:55 remaining. A Dami Adeyinka layup took a 33-31 lead for the Hawks with 1:22 remaining, but the Miners tied the game yet again, with the half ending 33-33.
The game stayed close throughout the third quarter, with a jumper by Laconte making it 35-33 Hawks ten seconds into play. A layup from Nelson took the lead again for the Hawks, making it 37-35 with 8:17 remaining. This was the last time the Hawks held the lead in the half, however, with a steal and a jumper from Maddie Spagnola tying the game at 39 with 6:49 remaining being the only time the Hawks came close to taking the lead again. The quarter ended with the score being 48-47 Miners.
The final quarter was rough for the Hawks, with the team not scoring at all until Martin sank a three-pointer with 5:56 remaining, making the score 58-50 Miners. This was the closest the deficit became for the remainder of the game.
Beth Matas Martin led the team with 15 points in 32 minutes of play, with Maddie Spagnola scoring 14 points with 4 steals in 34 minutes and Sarah Nelson scoring 11 points with 5 rebounds in 24 minutes.
