Beth Matas Martin Scores Season-High 23 Points, Hawks Fall Versus Maryville

QUINCY, IL---The Quincy University women's basketball team fell 72-65 to Maryville in a close GLVC matchup at Pepsi Arena on Thursday (Jan 13) evening.

The Hawks jumped to an early 4-0 lead on layups from Sarah Nelson and Emma Knipe. Another layup by Beth Matas Martin made it 6-3, with layups from Regan Loconte, Nelson, and Knipe making the lead 12-9 with 5:46 remaining in the first quarter. A three-pointer from Dami Adeyinka made it 15-11 Hawks, but after this came a drought, which was broken with three-pointers from Martin and Marta Rivera, making it 21-20 with 1:25 remaining in the quarter. The Saints took the lead again, but a jumper from Martin tied the game at 23-23 leading into the second quarter.

The second quarter began with another drought for the Hawks, which was broken by two more three-pointers by Adeyinka, making it 29-26 Hawks with 6:08 remaining. However, the Hawks would not score again until a jumper by Rivera, making it 34-31 Saints with 2:20 remaining. A three-pointer from Martin tied the game with 1:42 remaining, but the Hawks were unable to regain the lead by the end of the half, with a jumper from Knipe making it 37-36 Saints at halftime.

Martin tied the game again with another three-pointer at 39-39 early in the third quarter, with another three from Martin, as well as a three and a layup from Maddie Spagnola, making it a 47-44 lead with 5:46 remaining. But the Saints retook the lead soon after and kept it for the remainder of the quarter, putting an end to the Hawks's time leading the game. A layup from Grace Flanagan and a good free throw by Rivera made it 55-50 going into the final quarter.

The fourth quarter was dominated by the Saints, with the Hawks not coming within 5 points of the lead for the rest of the game.
