Box Score 2 Fort Lauderdale, FL. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team began the season with a doubleheader at the Shark Invitational on Friday (September 3). The Hawks lost the opener to Pittsburg State in straight sets, then defeated Stonehill College in straight sets a few short hours later.
Game 1
In set one, the Hawks fell behind early after Pittsburg State's 6-1 run. Quincy was unable to close the gap and lost the opening set, 25-18.
The second set started similarly as the Gorillas took an early 5-1 lead, but this time, the Hawks pushed back with four straight points to tie the score 5-5. Pittsburg then took a four-point lead to make it 9-5. Quincy did not have another late push and lost the set, 25-15.
Quincy went after it in the third set taking an early 6-2 lead. The Hawks maintained that four-point lead until Pitt State scored five points and took an 11-10 lead. The Hawks gained the momentum back after they went on a five-point run of their own to recuperate the lead, 15-11. Both teams battled down the stretch, but the Hawks came out on the short end, 25-23.
Game 2
In the first set, the Hawks scored the first two points, but Stonehill quickly tied things up, 2-2. QU answered by going on a massive 12-1 run to make the score 14-3. This was plenty of cushion for the Hawks as they won the first set, 25-14.
Quincy did it again in the third set and took an early 5-1 lead. The Hawks took command early and delivered another vital blow after they rattled off ten straight points to secure a 25-12 win.
For the third and last set of the game, the Skyhawks scored the first point to make it 1-0, but Quincy took the lead with two straight points, 2-1. The match stayed relatively close until QU scored seven straight points and took an 11 point lead over Stonehill, 19-8. This sealed the deal and QU won the third set by a 25-11 final score.
