Hawks' Season Ends In Five-Goal Shocker With Maryville

ST. CHARLES, MO – The Quincy men's soccer team had their impressive run come to an end in the GLVC tournament semifinals on Friday afternoon (April 23). Quincy was dealt a 3-2 deficit to second-seeded Maryville University.

Quincy entered the contest looking to avenge their first loss of the season in the first game of the season (Feb. 26). Coming into today's match up, QU had won seven of its last eight games, while only giving up six goals in the time span.

Cole Hayes scored the first goal of the contest in the 22nd minute off a dish from Edrey Caceres and Jack Rhead. Hayes continued his efficient offensive output late this season with his sixth goal of the season, and it came at a crucial moment in the first half. With just under five minutes remaining in the first, Maryville returned the favor off a strike from MU's Braden Johnson. The QU's defense bounced back and held strong over the final few minutes of period one. Quincy entered the break knotted even at one goal a piece with QU getting off seven shots to the Saint's six.

Moments into the second half, a miscue by the Hawks gave Maryville the lead, 2-1. Quincy quickly regrouped as redshirt freshman Jack Rhead scored is fourth goal of the season, tying the contest at 2-2 after a corner kick.

The Saints had the last say when in the 86th minute, a shot from over 20 yards went past the outstretched hands of Michele Barletta.

The Hawks made one last push with under a minute to go. QU had one last opportunity on a corner kick, but Maryville's keeper came out with the ball in a scrum close to the goal line before time expired as the Hawks dropped a heartbreaker in the conference semifinals, 3-2.

It was as even of a match with the Hawks putting up 13 shots compared to Marville's 12, and five of which came on goal next to the Saints four.

Looking Ahead
Men's soccer was picked to finish 10th in GLVC in the preseason and worked their way to a top-four finish. Mike Carpenter's squad will return a strong core with a blend of youth and experience come fall of 2021.
