Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team welcomed Truman State University for a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon (Apr. 18). The Hawks swept the Bulldogs with scores of 6-2 and 6-1.
Game 1
The Bulldogs scored first after a couple of singles were followed by a RBI double to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. The Hawks answered right after when Bailey Mitchell opened up the bottom of the fourth with a single and then advanced to second on the play. Chelsea Hooker hit a mammoth shot for a two-run home run to left center and gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead.
Mitchell came up big again in the bottom of the fifth and extended QU's lead with a three-run bomb to make it 5-1. Madeline Ruzicka brought in one more in the next inning as she hit a RBI double to bring the last run of the game for the Hawks, 6-1.
Game 2
Truman started things off in the first inning with a home run to score the first run. After a couple of errors by the Bulldogs, the Hawks placed runners on second and third as Ashley Gerber came through with a two-RBI single to give QU the lead, 2-1. After one out, Audrey Hermann singled to load the bases for the Hawks, but the Truman State catcher committed an error that brought one more for Quincy to make it 3-1.
The Bulldogs scored once again in the top of the third with a RBI single and the Hawks' lead was cut to 3-2. It was not until the fourth that the Hawks were able to put things together and scored three more runs. Casey Brennan walked, Gerber was hit by a pitch, and Ruzicka singled to load the bases. Hermann reached base on a fielder's choice as she grounded to third, Brennan was out at home, but Gerber managed to score to bring in one extra run for the Hawks, 4-2. Courtney Kernich hit a RBI double to left center and that was followed by a RBI single from Taylor Downen for the last run of the game. Quincy won by a final score of 6-2.Â
The softball team has won nine of their last ten games including five in a row.Â
