Hawks Lose Battle On the Boards; Fall to Lewis 94-75

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team took on a desperate Lewis Flyers team on Thursday night (Feb. 4) who came into the matchup on a five-game skid. The Hawks played a tight first half before falling behind after halftime in a 94-75 defeat.

Physical play was prominent early in the game. The Flyers wretched up the defensive pressure, but the Hawks stood firm. After the first three minutes, the score was 6-6 after buckets from Tanner Stuckman and Jamaurie Coakley

At the 12:18 mark, Lewis was able to gain a seven point lead following seven unanswered points. Quincy weathered the storm and came back by cutting the deficit to just one point over the next three minutes. Jamaurie Coakley scored five points after a three and a jumper to bring the Hawks back in it.

Coakley was cooking in the first half as he tallied 15 in the first twenty minutes.

Tanner Stuckman later tied the game at 28-28 on a field goal from downtown with 8:17 to go in the first half, but Lewis answered back with six unanswered points.

Stuckman stopped the bleeding with another deep three to make the score 34-31 Lewis.

With two minutes to go before halftime, Lewis once again captured a seven-point lead, but QU scored the final four points off the hands of Stuckman. The Hawks held the Flyers scoreless in the final two minutes of the first half, and QU trailed 45-42 as both teams headed to the locker room.

Second chance points helped the Flyers stay ahead in the first twenty minutes as 18 of their 45 first half points came after offensive rebounds.

After the break, QU stuck around for the first eight minutes of the final half. Lewis grabbed a quick seven-point lead in the first minute, but Quincy kept the deficit to no more than six points until the halfway point.

At 10:30 Lewis went up by eight points, 65-57. Tanner Stuckman came back with a made jumper to cut it to six with 9:40 to go, but it was all Lewis the rest of the way.

From the 7:35 mark until there was only 2:48 left in the game, the Flyers outscored the Hawks 14-2 and enlarged their lead to 22 points, 87-65. Quincy's only points during this stretch were a free throw each by Stuckman and Jaylen Boyd

This almost five-minute stretch was the difference in the contest, and QU was unable to make up ground. The final score was 94-75 in favor of the visitors.

Lewis got after it on the boards and in the paint, as Quincy was outrebounded 50-26 with the Flyers grabbing 22 offensive chances. In the paint, Quincy was outscored 52-26.
