Liberty, MO – The Quincy University men's basketball team hit the road Thursday night (Feb 18.) at William Jewell and used a 52-point second half to earn a 74-70 win. The Hawks made 11-of-16 from three-point range in the second half, and they were led by Jack Youmans. Youmans had himself a career night with 27 points, all in the second half.
William Jewell opened the game with a 7-0 run, but QU responded with a Jaylen Boyd bucket and an Adam Moore four-point play to answer the bell. Paul Zillinkas and Jamaurie Coakley added layups to tie the score at 15-15 with just under 10:00 to go in the first half.
The Cardinals responded with an 11-0 run capped off by an Esyan Wiley lay up, and William Jewell held a 26-15 advantage. The Cardinals went 7-of-8 from the field during that stretch.
Freshman Solomon Gustafson had a put-back and block, which was then followed by three foul shots made by Charles Callier, and the Hawks got back in it, 26-20.
QU trailed 33-22 at the half and shot just 26.7% from the field while only scoring two points in the final seven minutes of the frame.
Quincy charged out of the locker room with an 8-0 blitz to begin the second half. Youmans made a layup with 18:08 left in the second half to close out the run which made the score 33-30 in favor of Jewell.
The Hawks trailed 38-30, but three straight three-pointers by Youmans and an Adam Moore layup tied the game at 41-41 with 13:34 to go in regulation.
William Jewell led 47-46 after Youmans buried another three-pointer with 12:06 to go in the second half. Youmans gave the Hawks their first advantage at 55-54 with 8:50 to play. Moore then added another four-point play to give QU the lead, 59-56. Callier also got in on the action with a three-pointer to give QU a six point lead, 62-56, with 7:05 to go in the second half.
The Cardinals answered with back-to-back three's and QU held a slight 65-62 advantage with 4:27 left.
Silas Crisler drew a foul at the 2:08 mark and made two free throws to make the score 70-67. Crisler followed with a step back midrange shot a minute later that pushed the Hawks lead to 72-67 with 1:02 left.
Youmans iced the game and made two foul shots with 1.5 seconds left to give QU at 74-70 lead.
The Naples, Florida native dropped 27 points in the second half and hit seven consecutive three-pointers to charge QU to victory. Youmans made nine of his final ten field goal attempts and during the career-high performance.
