SAINT CHARLES, MO. - The QU men's basketball team got off to a hot start in Thursday (Dec. 2) night's GLVC road contest with the Lindenwood Lions, but the home team roared back from 11 points down to force overtime in the final five and a half minutes. Quincy was edged in the overtime period and fell, 91-87.
The Hawks showed no signs of jet lag coming off the heels of their Alaska trip this past weekend in the early stages of Thursday night's game. QU shot just under 50% from the field in the first half and knocked down four of their seven three-point attempts.
Quincy's efficient start led to an eleven-point lead with 2:18 left before halftime.
Solomon Gustafson scored in the paint to make the score 34-23 favoring the Hawks.
The Lions scored back-to-back buckets before the break as Quincy held a 34-27 lead going into the locker room.
After the intermission, Lindenwood was able to tie the game at 37-37. With 12:42 to play, the Lions got out to a five-point lead at 47-42, but the Hawks dug in and made a run.
Over the next seven minutes, Quincy went on a 29-13 tear to storm ahead for a 71-60 lead with 5:34 left in regulation.
Mark Bradshaw Jr. and
Nate Shockey helped fuel what was a rapid paced run over those seven minutes of play.
The duo of Bradshaw Jr. and Shockey each scored a career-high in points in the game. Shockey led all scorers with 27 points on 10-24 shooting and went 4-of-6 from deep.
Mark Bradshaw Jr. scored a career-high 25 points on the night in his first career start with QU. The Des Moines Area Community College transfer shot 50% from both the field and from downtown and scored 18 of his 25 in the second half.
Lindenwood was able to chip away at QU's lead in the final five minutes and cut the score to 73-71 after a made three with 1:13 left to play.
A crucial moment in the game came right near the end of regulation.
Nate Shockey converted on an acrobatic reverse layup with eight seconds remaining. A timeout was called as Lindenwood had the last possession.
The Lions were able to get a shot off, but the shot rimmed out and fell to LU's Brandon Trimble. Trimble went back up immediately from mid-range as time expired. QU was called for a foul as the clock hit zero, and the Lions got two free throw attempts to tie it. Trimble knocked down both to send the game to overtime.
Lindenwood got the first bucket of the extra period, but Bradshaw Jr. came down the floor and knocked down a three-pointer to answer. The Lions countered that with a three of their own to go up 82-80.
After a pair of made free throws by the home team with 1:32 left, the Hawks trailed by four.
As a response,
Nate Shockey drove to the cup and converted on an and-one to bring the score back to one. Lindenwood made two free throws on the other end to go back up three.
Shockey once again got the ball on the wing, pulled up, and hit a game-tying three ball with 45 seconds left. LWU came down the floor and made a basket late in the shot clock to go ahead 88-86 with 24 seconds left.
Shockey's next field goal attempt was no good, and the Hawks were forced to foul. Lindenwood knocked down free throws in the final seconds to hold off the Hawks in a 91-87 back-and-forth thriller.
One glaring stat from Thursday night's game was the free throw attempts. Lindenwood was allowed to get to the line a total of 24 times to Quincy's six in all three periods.
