BOLIVAR, MO. - Quincy University men's soccer team ended their regular season slate in winning fashion on Sunday evening (Oct. 31).
Ben Whitmore punched in the game-winning goal, and
Michele Barletta and
Christos Kalaitzis combined for the shutout in a 1-0 win over Southwest Baptist.
After grinding out much of the first half, Quincy had SBU on the ropes when they had three corner kicks in a row. On the third one,
Aubrey Reis kicked the ball into the box, and SBU's goalkeeper tried to fully extend and punch the ball away. Instead, the ball fell to the feet of
Ben Whitmore who powered in his first career goal from close range.
Michele Barletta started the game in goal for the Hawks and made three saves in the opening 45 minutes.
Christos Kalaitzis came in to relieve Barletta in the second half and turned away some crucial shots down the stretch.
Kalaitzis made three saves in a seven-minute span from the 80th minute then made a diving save on SBU's last shot in the 87th minute.
The combined effort gave QU a 1-0 win to cap off the regular season. Quincy ended the season 7-6-3, 5-5-3 GLVC and sat just outside the top-eight seeds in the GLVC by half a game.
