Hawks Score 28 Second-Half Points in Setback at Truman State

KIRKSVILLE, MO. - The Quincy University football team traveled to Kirksville, Missouri to take on Truman State on Saturday (Oct. 30) and fell 49-28.

Quincy deferred to the second half, but Truman scored on its first two offensive drives to take it 14-0 with 7:42 left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs gained 151 yards on their opening two drives of the game.

Quincy punted on its opening drive, then threw an interception on their next offensive possession while trailing by two touchdowns. Truman State traveled 36 yards down the field before Mark Cox hopped on a fumble to give QU the football back with 1:28 left in the first quarter. The recovered fumble was QU's 17th this season, which is the most in the NCAA.

The Hawks had a first and goal-to-go from the five-yard line after the fumble but was shut out of the end zone by the Bulldogs defense. Then QU came up empty handed after the 22-yard field goal was missed to keep the score 14-0 with 11:49 left in the second.

QU forced the Bulldogs to punt after the missed field goal, but the Hawks threw another interception which led to a touchdown drive by the Bulldogs to make it 21-0 with 4:49 to go in the first half.

Quincy got the football on their own seven-yard line and drove it to the Truman 46 before they were forced to punt, which gave the ball back to TSU with 1:34 left in the first half with the ball on their own 23-yard line. Truman managed an eight-play, 77-yard drive to close out the half and take a 28-0 lead.

Truman drove an average of 69.25 yards down the field on its four touchdown drives during the first half.

To begin the second half, Quincy opened with the longest drive of the game, and one of its most impressive drives of the season. The Hawks put together a 16-play, 57-yard drive that was capped off by a 1-yard touchdown run by Tremayne Lee to make the score 28-7 with 9:12 left in the third quarter.

Truman responded with a TD to extend its lead to 35-7, and then QB Tionne Harris connected with A.J. Hardin for a 52-yard touchdown with 5:15 left in the third to make it 35-14. It was Hardin's seventh touchdown reception of the season.

Truman responded again to make it 42-14 with 1:56 left in the third, but QU capped off a 10-play, 68-yard drive on a 16-yard acrobatic run where Harris leaped into the endzone to make the score 42-21 with 13:58 left in the fourth quarter.

Truman added another TD by one of the nation's leading rushers, Cody Schrader, to make the advantage 49-21 with 9:11 left in the fourth. Harris tossed another score to Jalen Lawrence with 18 seconds left in the fourth quarter and then Truman took a knee to secure the win.
