Hawks Football Opens Season With Win At Central State

WILBERFORCE, OH – The Quincy Hawks traveled to Wilberforce, Ohio to face Central State for only the second time in program history.

1st Quarter

The Hawk offense looked efficient in their opening drive of the game. Quarterback Andrew Rund found Brandon Gaston on the first play from scrimmage to get things rolling with a seven-yard gain.

After a Hawks first down, QU later found themselves in a 3rd down and short when Jalen Griffin ripped a 22-yard run to get into Central State territory.

After a 9-yard catch from Beau Kaffka and an 8-yard gain by Oscee Calhoun, QU found themselves inside the CSU 10-yard line.

Rund found his tight end Beau Kaffka once again on a second and goal for the first touchdown of the 2019 season. The extra-point attempt failed leaving the score at 6-0 with 12:38 left in the first quarter.

Quincy's defense looked stout on their first drive as Marcel Scott recorded a 4-yard sack on second down. The Hawks forced a punt to give the ball back to the offense.

In the second drive of the game, QU continued to march. Rund started off with a rushing gain of fourteen yards for a quick first down. Quincy was able to get the ball down to Central State's 24-yard line where they faced a third down and eight. An incompletion forced a fourth down, and the offense stayed on the field.

The Hawks were unable to convert and turned the ball over on downs.

Quincy's defense once again did a nice job of getting off the field by forcing a quick three-and-out.

On the next Quincy possession, the offense orchestrated a 47-yard drive capped off by a 4-yard rushing touchdown by Oscee Calhoun. This gave the Hawks a 12-0 lead. The two-point conversion attempt was denied.

On the next Central State possession, the Hawks were able to stop the Marauder offense on third down and short to force yet another punt after Keenan Stegall made the tackle short of the sticks.

2nd Quarter

On the next offensive possession, Andrew Rund started from his own 35-yard line. The Hawks went 65 yards in just three and half minutes as Jalen Griffin punched in a 1-yard touchdown. QU went ahead 18-0.

Central State drove the ball down to the Hawks' 24-yard line and threatened to get on the board in their next drive. Sophomore cornerback Nathaniel Reese shut down the scoring chance by jumping in front of a CSU receiver making a leaping interception in the end zone. It was Quincy's first defensive takeaway of the season.

The Hawks were unable to take advantage of the turnover as they were forced to punt three plays later.

Central State looked to mount a sustainable drive as they got the ball down to the Quincy 21-yard line. An offensive false start put the ball back five yards making it third down and ten.

On the next play, Quincy's Marvion Harris intercepted a pass, but the play was negated after a defensive offsides call. The Hawk defense was unfazed as they stopped CSU on the next two plays to force a turnover on downs.

Quincy got the ball back on offense with 2:04 left in the quarter as they looked to score once more before halftime. The drive started at QU's 32-yard line, but after gains by Braden Lowery, Brandon Gaston, and a short rush by Griffin, the Hawks were on their own 44-yard line.

A defensive pass interference on the next play put the ball in Central State territory with about a minute left in the half.

Andrew Rund found Marlin Washington on a deep 34-yard connection as Washington was brought down just before the goal line. Quincy called timeout with nine seconds left.

After the timeout, Oscee Calhoun ran in for the 1-yard touchdown for his second of the game. Jalen Griffin added the two-point conversion to make the score 26-0 going into halftime.

3rd Quarter

The defense picked up right where they left of to start the second half. Quincy forced a three-and-out forcing CSU to punt. After a short punt, the Hawks got the ball at the Central State 35-yard line.

Andrew Rund and the offense took nine plays to go the thirty five yards. Marlin Washington capped off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown catch from Rund to put the Hawks ahead 32-0 with 11:14 to play in the third quarter.

On the next Central State possession, the Marauders were able to pick up a pair of first downs. Quincy's defense got off the field by stalling the Marauders at their own 45-yard line.

QU and the offense drove for 12 plays on their next possession, but the drive stalled after turning the ball over on downs on the CSU 25-yard line.

4th Quarter

Central State countered with an 11-play drive that got them down to the QU 26-yard line, but Peyten Chappel and Craig Travis III came up with a stop on 4th down and ten to stall the Central State offense.

Quincy's first two drives in the fourth quarter did not yield points as sophomore Trey Mosley came in at quarterback for Andrew Rund

With about five minutes to play, Central State connected on a 72-yard pass that put them inside QU's 10-yard line. The Marauders punched in a five-yard touchdown and the two-point conversion to get on the board. The Hawks led 32-8.

On Mosley's third drive, the sophomore found Carlton Stamp for a 15-yard touchdown with 2:20 left to play. This gave the Hawks a 38-8 lead.

Central State nearly scored on the last play of the game, but the catch in the endzone was ruled an incomplete pass. The Hawks won the 2019 season opener 38-8.

Quincy's offense gained 587 yards of total offense while the defense allowed just 84 rushing yards in the contest. The Hawks also spread the ball in the passing game as eleven different Hawks caught a pass.

This was Quincy's first season-opening win since beating FCS D-1 opponent Drake in the 2016 season opener.
