Kansas City, MO – The Quincy University men's soccer team was persistent in their 1-0 victory over Rockhurst on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 22).
Anthony Christante delivered a late goal to give the Hawks a GLVC win on the road.
1st Half
The battle of both the Quincy Hawks and Rockhurst Hawks was a defensive one in the first forty-five minutes. Rockhurst almost scored an electric goal early.
Inside QU's box, RU sent a bicycle kick towards the net in the 7th minute. Goalkeeper
Adam Whybrow made a diving save to keep the ball from going into the net as the game remained scoreless.
In the 10th minute,
Cooper Reis fired Quincy's first shot of the game, but he missed the mark high.
QU put two shots towards the net between the 22nd and 23rd minute. The first shot by
Macker Little missed wide right followed by a strike from
Cooper Reis. Reis once again missed over the crossbar as QU could not get on the board.
Cooper Reis continued to lead the offensive attack in the 26th minute. Reis put the only shot on goal for the Hawks at the midway point of the first half. Rockhurst's goalkeeper made the save to keep the game tied.
The last ten minutes of the first half saw a flurry of offensive chances. Both teams got off nine shots in that span, but neither squad could find the back of the net.
The score sat tied 0-0 going into halftime.
2nd Half
The Hawks tried to get things going right out of the break.
Craig Chisholm had a scoring chance less than a minute into the second half. Chisholm's shot grazed over the cross bar.
Quincy's attack turned the intensity up a notch in the second half as they tried to score the game's first goal. The Hawks front line out-shot Rockhurst 10-3 in the last forty-five minutes of play.
In a three minute span between the 51st and 54th minute, Quincy was able to get off three shots. All three shots missed.
In the 63rd minute, Rockhurst nearly scored the first goal of the game.
Adam Whybrow laid out to get just enough of the shot and redirect it away from the net.
Whybrow made six saves in the game and all of them were needed. Four times Whybrow went full extension to get in front of Rockhurst's shots to keep them from getting on the board.
Late in the game, Quincy's offense found pay dirt. In the 89th minute,
Cooper Reis sent a ball in from the left side.
Anthony Christante came streaking in and connected with the cross. Christante's header beat the keeper with less than two minutes left to give QU a 1-0 lead.
The Hawks held on to the lead and left Kansas City with two wins on the weekend.
