QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team faced off with Lindenwood University in a GLVC matchup for the first time in program history. Both teams combined for over 900 yards of total offense despite the wet conditions, but the Hawks came up short by a score of 33-27.
1st Quarter
Quincy won the opening coin flip and elected to receive the ball first. After a fair catch on the kickoff, the offense got gains of five and four yards to bring up a third down and one yard. QU did not convert as quarterback
Andrew Rund's pass to
Chris Poindexter in the slot fell incomplete.
Lindenwood took over at their own 37-yard line after the QU punt. It took the Lions just two plays to find the end zone. The pass-heavy offense of Lindenwood was evident after a gain of 12 yards on the first play from scrimmage was followed by a 51-yard connection for a touchdown. LU went ahead 7-0 with 13:24 left in the first quarter.
On the first play of Quincy's next drive, Rund connected with
Brandon Gaston for 26 yards down the sideline. On the following play, Rund rushed for an eleven yard gain to pick up another Hawk first down. Three plays later, the Hawks drive stalled as they were forced to punt for a second time.
The Lions were able to drive for nine plays until being faced with a fourth down and one yard at the QU 39-yard line. The Hawks defense rose to the challenge and stopped Lindenwood short of the yard to gain. Quincy took over on downs.
QU's offense rode the wave of momentum provided by the defensive stop and orchestrated a nine-play, 61-yard drive.
Andrew Rund made two big connections on the drive as he found
Chris Poindexter for 33 yards, then found
Paul Sullivan for a 25-yard chunk play. The Quincy drive ended with a four-yard touchdown pass from Rund to his tight end
Beau Kaffka. This tied the game at 7-7 after
Nathan Kewney knocked in the point after attempt.
In Lindenwood's next offensive possession, LU gained one first down but was later forced to punt when Quincy's defense got off the field on a third and fifteen.
On a third down and seven, Rund found
Marlin Washington for fourteen yards to keep their drive alive. Later in the drive at LU's 41-yard line, the Hawks were faced with a fourth down and four yards. QU was stopped short and turned the ball over on downs.
2nd Quarter
The Lions started the second quarter with the ball and mounted another scoring drive. Lindenwood went 59 yards in eight plays to mover ahead 13-7. Lindenwood missed the point after attempt.
Quincy looked to answer on their next drive, and it started off promisingly.
Jalen Griffin ripped off an eleven-yard run on the first play to move the sticks, then Rund connected with Gaston for a nine yard gain.
Later in the drive,
Oscee Calhoun scampered for another eleven-yard gain to move the sticks on second down and nine. QU's offense came up big a few plays later on a fourth down and two.
Andrew Rund found Kaffka for a 20-yard gain. This put QU at Lindenwood's 11-yard line.
Unfortunately, the Hawks were stood up on fourth dowm at LU's 9-yard line to end the drive. Lindenwood remained ahead 13-7.
The Lions nearly drove all the way down the field on their next drive. Starting from their own nine-yard line, LU marched down to QU's five. The Lions dropped a pass on third and goal in the end zone to bring up a field goal attempt. The Hawks caught a break as the 22-yard attempt went wide right leaving the score at 13-7.
Quincy was unable to get much going on the next drive and was forced to punt.
On a third down and one, the Hawks intercepted a LU pass, but the play was negated because of a defensive offsides penalty. On the very next play, Lindenwood connected for a 54-yard touchdown to expand the lead to 20-7 with 2:34 left in the first half.
Needing to regain some momentum before halftime, Quincy turned to their two-minute offense. The uptempo pace paid off in a big way. The Hawks started their drive at their own 15-yard line, and Rund connected with
Briar Hancock for sixteen yards to get the ball rolling. Rund later rushed for twelve yards, and also found running back
Oscee Calhoun in the flat for an eleven gain to bring the Hawks to mid-field.
Paul Sullivan made a first down catch of twelve yards on a third down and ten to keep the drive alive. QU called timeout with 42 seconds left. After the timeout, Quincy ran three plays and gained just three yards to bring up a huge fourth down and seven with about thirty seconds left.
On fourth down, Rund heaved a pass deep down the far sideline towards
Brandon Gaston. With the defensive back draped all over him, Gaston reached up and made an incredible contested catch for a touchdown right before halftime. The Hawks went to the locker room down just 20-14.
3rd Quarter
Lindenwood started the second half with the ball and used up nearly five minutes of the third quarter in the opening drive. The Lions drove for twelve plays including a fourth down and two conversion that kept the drive alive. The Hawks had LU at third down and fourteen, but the Lions passing attack came up big again with a 25-yard touchdown connection. LU led 26-14 with 10:15 left in the third quarter.
On Quincy's next drive, the Hawks were able to pick up a first down on a third and short after an offsides on the Lions. The drive was short-lived as QU was later forced to punt.
Both teams exchanged punts on the next two drives. When QU got the ball back they started their drive from the LU 45-yard line with 3:12 left in the third quarter.
The Hawks drove nine plays in under two and a half minutes to pull back within one touchdown. Freshman
Keenan Hailey rushed six times on the drive, and capped it off with a 1-yard score. QU trailed 27-21.
4th Quarter
Quincy's defense got off the field in a hurry after a short drive by the Lions.
Peyten Chappel came up with a huge third down sack to force LU to punt.
Unfortunately, the Hawks were sacked for a loss on third down in their next drive to give the ball right back to Lindenwood. With 12:30 left in the game, the Lions embarked on a 60-yard drive that ended with a three-yard touchdown pass. Lindenwood went ahead 33-21.
A key turnover in the game came on QU's next drive which changed the complexion of the game. The Hawks were driving and got into Lindenwood territory with under ten minutes left. On second down and ten from LU's 28-yard line,
Andrew Rund threw an interception for the lone turnover in the contest.
The QU defense had their back and forced the Lions to punt the ball back to QU after a three-and-out.
The Hawk offense got the ball back with five minutes to play, needing a score. On the drive,
Chris Poindexter came up with a huge 24-yard catch in the middle of the field and took a helmet-removing hit by the Lindenwood safety. The running back-wideout hybrid hung on to secure the catch as LU's safety was ejected for targeting.
After the penalty, QU was near Lindenwood's 10-yard line.
Andrew Rund ran the next two plays for a gain of nine and two yards. The two-yard rush was Rund's third total touchdown of the game as the Hawks pulled within six points at 33-27 LU.
Only three minutes remained in the game and QU had two timeouts left, so the Lions needed a couple first downs to seal the game. The Lions squeezed out the final three minutes of clock and held off the Hawks.
