QUINCY, IL – The Quincy University men's soccer team fell to the Drury Panthers 2-0 on Sunday afternoon (Hawktober 13). The Panthers saved seven QU shots to seal the shutout victory.
1st Half
The first ten minutes of Sunday's GLVC matchup were quiet as neither team had a shot or corner kick. Quincy was the first to get a shot on goal as
Cole Hayes sent one towards the net in the 11
th minute. The shot was saved by goalkeeper Yannick Lamers.
Anthony Christante got into the teeth of the defense and had a shot blocked in the 21
st minute of play, and the Hawks had another shot blocked in the 24
th minute.
Drury turned the tides just four minutes later by getting on the board. In the 28
th minute, the Panthers hit a streaking shot into the upper right corner of the net to go ahead 1-0.
The Hawks had corner kicks in the 37
th and 40
th minutes but were unable to convert off the ball into the box.
Adam Whybrow made a late first half save with thirty seconds before halftime.
QU trailed 1-0 going to the locker room.
2nd Half
Quincy kicked off the second half with a pair of corner kick opportunities in the 48
th and 49
th minute. The Hawks were turned away to leave the score at 1-0.
Anthony Christante sent a shot off in the 57
th minute but missed over the crossbar,
Cooper Reis missed just wide in the 61
st minute, and
Alsadiq Hasan had his shot saved in the 65
th minute.
The crucial blow came in the 69
th minute as a bounce did not go in QU's favor. The Hawks tried to clear a ball in the box, but saw the attempt redirect the wrong way for a Drury goal. DU went ahead 2-0 with a little over twenty minutes left to play.
Quincy frantically tried to cut the deficit in half in those final twenty minutes. The Hawks rattled off seven shots including five on goal.
Yannick Lamers made all five saves including two late saves in the last three minutes of the game. Quincy was handed their first loss at Legends Stadium in 2019 2-0.
