QUINCY, IL - The Quincy University women's volleyball team used a solid defensive performance and an efficient offensive attack to sweep Maryville 3-0 on Saturday afternoon (Hawktober 12).
The Hawks held the Saints to a .095 hitting percentage, which is the lowest by a QU opponent this season.
1st Set
The Hawks got off to a fast start on Saturday, looking to bounce back from a tough Thursday night loss to Missouri S&T.
QU scored the first three points of the match behind kills from
Emily Rehagen and
Sarah Brown.Â
The Saints answered with two points of their own, but it was all Quincy after that.Â
The Hawks went on a 4-0 run after two points from
Emily Rehagen and a
Stephanie Mizeur kill, and they never slowed down.
Back-to-back kills from
Sarah Brown gave QU their largest lead of the set at the time, 18-8. Maryville took a timeout to talk things over and try to stop the home team's momentum.
The Saints scored the first point out of the timeout and then the Hawks offense went crazy.Â
Four straight kills from Brown surged the Hawks forward. QU took the final seven points of the set to win 25-9.
2nd Set
Both teams traded points to start the second set as the Hawks held a 6-5 edge early on.
The Hawks extended their lead to six after
Stephanie Mizeur fired down a kill and
Sara Rathbun recorded her 7th service ace of the season.
Emma Lynch and
Lauren Worl followed with back-to-back kills to make the score 11-5.
Maryville cut the lead to three before Quincy went on another run.
Sarah Brown and
Emily Rehagen continued to dominate as they each recorded a kill during the 4-0 stretch. QU led 18-11.
The Saints fought back once again, scoring 10 of the next 13 points to tie the score at 21-21.
The Hawks were not phased, however, as they rattled off four straight points. Junior right-side hitter
Emma Lynch slammed home a kill to give QU the 25-21 victory.
3rd Set
Quincy had to play from behind in the third set as Maryville went up 11-5.
The Hawks persevered and tied it at 13-13 after a kill from
Emily Rehagen.
Makayla Knoblauch backed that up with a kill of her own to give QU their first lead of the set.
Quincy controlled the game the rest of the way. Back-to-back kills from
Emma Lynch and another
Sara Rathbun ace stretched the Hawks lead to 24-17.
After the Saints won the next point,
Lauren Worl put down the game-winning kill. The Hawks won the third set 25-18 and swept Maryville for the 7th straight time.
