QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University Hawks softball team swept the Bellarmine Knights Saturday (Apr. 7). The Hawks won game one 6-1 and game two 11-0 in the doubleheader.
Play by Play:
Game 1
Mac Kenzie Collier was dominant in her complete-game win. Collier went seven innings, allowed just four hits and one earned run while striking out nine Knights.
The Hawks struck first in the bottom of the first inning with three runs on four hits.
QU added two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-0. Dana Walsh led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a groundout. Walsh scored on a fly out.
With two on a two out in the inning, Remi Ferguson scored Kay Bettendorf on a single to give the Hawks the 5-0 lead.
Bellarmine plated a run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-1.
Dana Walsh blasted a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to give the Hawks the 6-1 lead.
Collier finished her complete game by retiring the side in the top of the seventh to give the Hawks a 6-1 win.
Game 2
Kay Bettendorf got the scoring started for the second game in a row, doubling to score Courtney Kernich and give the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Remi Ferguson followed with an RBI single to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Dana Walsh blasted her second home run of the day to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
Raigen Schwartz singled and Courtney Kernich doubled to extend the inning. Kay Bettendorf launched a three-run homer to give the Hawks a 6-0 lead.
Megan Sharpshair doubled and was singled home by Remi Ferguson to give the Hawks a 7-0 lead after two innings.
The Hawks scored four runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 11-0 over the Knights.
The Hawks loaded the bases to begin the inning.
With two outs, Kay Bettendorf singled home two runs to give the Hawks a 9-0 lead.
The next batter, Megan Sharpshair, doubled home two runs to give QU the 11-0 lead.
This lead was all the Hawks would need as the defeated the Knights in five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Sara Demuth tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just four hits and striking out four in the win.
