QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks softball team dropped a pair of GLVC games on Sunday (Apr. 29). The Hawks fell twice to the William Jewell Cardinals by scores of 8-0 and 12-6.
Play by Play:
Game 1
The Hawks were in locked in a tight pitching battle in game one of the doubleheader.
QU had an opportunity to plate a run in the bottom of the first inning as Raigen Schwartz led off the inning with a single. With two outs Megan Sharpshair singled and advanced to second as the Cardinals attempted to throw out Schwartz going first to third on the single.
The Hawks were unable to score as Remi Ferguson was retired to end the inning.
The Cardinals finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. William Jewell scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch.
A two-run home run later in the inning gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth, the Cardinals loaded the bases with two outs in the frame.
A single to left field scored a run and gave the Cardinals a 4-0 lead.
An error by the Hawks allowed another Cardinal run to score and extend the lead to 5-0.
The next batter for the Cardinals lifted a three-run home run to give the Cardinals an 8-0 lead.
The Hawks were unable to score in the bottom of the frame and QU dropped the game 8-0 after six innings due to the eight-run rule.
Game 2
The Cardinals kept the offense rolling in the second game of the doubleheader.
William Jewell plated eight runs in the first two innings of play.
QU cut the lead in the bottom of the third inning.
Morgan Heckman led off the inning with a double to right center field. Heckman scored on a single by Katelyn Gratza.
Raigen Schwartz followed with a walk to put runners on first and second.
Megan Sharpshair launched a home run to right field and cut the Cardinals lead to 8-4.
William Jewell pushed its lead to 9-4 in the top of the fourth.
QU launched its second home run of the game as Kylie Powers homered to center field, scoring Remi Ferguson who led off the inning with a double.
The Cardinals scored three runs in the top of the seventh. The Cardinals used a pair of home runs to take a 12-6 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
The Hawks could not overcome the lead and dropped the second game of the doubleheader 12-6.
