Hawks Softball Keeps Winning Streak Alive With Sweep Of Lewis

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team extended its winning streak to six with a sweep of Lewis on Sunday (Apr. 22).  The Hawks won the first game of the day in dramatic fashion with a walk-off home run to beat the Flyers 9-8.  A dynamic pitching performance by Emily Griskell gave the Hawks a 4-2 win in game two. 

Play by Play:

Game 1
QU got on the board first when Megan Sharpshair led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run.  

The Hawks took advantage of an error with the bases loaded and QU held a 2-0 lead after two innings.  

QU added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.  

Kylie Powers doubled to lead off the inning and scored on a double to left center by Morgan Heckman.

The Hawks added one more run in the inning to take a 4-0 lead over the Flyers.  

The Flyers offense came alive in the top of the fifth, tying the game with a grand slam.  A two-run home run two batters later gave the Flyers a 6-4 lead.  

Lewis added two more runs in the top of the sixth to extend its lead to 8-4.  

QU got three runs back in the bottom half of the inning to cut the lead to 8-7.

With one out in the inning and a pair of runners on base, Katelyn Gratza doubled to left center field to score Morgan Heckman.  

The next batter, Raigen Schwartz, doubled to score Karli McLaughlin and Gratza.

Trailing by one in the bottom of the seventh, Kay Bettendorf led off with a single to center field.  A sacrifice bunt moved Bettendorf to second with one out.  

Freshman Remi Ferguson delivered the at-bat of the game with a two-run walk-off home run to give the Hawks a 9-8 win.  

Game 2
Emily Griskell delivered her best outing of the season in game two of the doubleheader.  Griskell tossed a complete game, three-hitter, in the Hawks 4-2 win.  

The Hawks scored first in the bottom of the third inning.  Katelyn Gratza tripled with two outs.  Raigen Schwartz singled home Gratza and the Hawks led 1-0.  

A leadoff home run by Megan Sharpshair gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth.  

Kylie Powers continued the offense in the fourth, doubling with one out in the frame.  Powers scored on an RBI double by Morgan Heckman.  

A RBI double by Katelyn Gratza later in the inning gave the Hawks a 4-0 lead through four innings of play.  

Despite allowing two runs in the top of the seventh, Griskell finished her complete game by retiring the Flyers and maintaining QU's 4-2 lead for the Hawks sixth straight win.
