QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team dropped its final game of the 2018 season with a loss to McKendree University 82-73 Saturday afternoon.
A torrid first-quarter pace saw 48 points scored between the two teams in the first 10 minutes of the contest. Julia Ruzevich scored the Hawks first eight points, knocking down a pair of three-pointers. Ruzevich continued her strong play throughout the first quarter, scoring 13 of the Hawks 27 first quarter points. QU led the Bearcats 27-21 at the end of the first quarter of play.
The Hawks offense was held in check in the second quarter and the Bearcats clawed back into the game. McKendree scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take a 28-27 lead over the Hawks.
QU retook the lead 36-33 after a three-pointer by Maddie Spagnola. McKendree took a 44-41 lead into the half.
Trailing by five, QU tied the game with a 5-0 run to tie the score 46-46 with 7:06 to play in the third quarter.
With 4:20 to play in the third quarter, QU took a 54-51 lead after a basket and a free throw by senior Anika Webster. The Hawks led 61-57 with just under two minutes to play in the quarter.
A 6-0 run by the Bearcats gave McKendree a 63-61 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Hawks and Bearcats sat tied at 67-67 with 7:07 to play in the game. An 8-0 run by the Bearcats gave McKendree a 75-67 lead.
With 1:06 remaining the Hawks cut the lead to six. The Bearcats made three free throws and held the Hawks scoreless over the final minute to defeat QU 82-73.
Anika Webster finished with a game-high 22 points.
Webster finished her career with 1,369 career points which places her sixth all-time in program history. She is just the fifth QU women's basketball player to score 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds. She also finished fourth all-time in both free throws made and attempted.
The Hawks finished the year 8-19, 4-14 in the GLVC.
