LIBERTY, Mo. - The Quincy University football team held off a furious second half charge by the William Jewell Cardinals to secure its third win of the season. The Hawks defeated the Cardinals 23-17 Saturday evening (Nov. 3).
Play by Play
1st Quarter
The Hawks recovered the opening kick off on an onside kick to grab the early momentum.
Andrew Rund took a shot and connected with
Marlin Washington on a 48-yard grab down to the Cardinal five yard line.
Shane Barrett rushed to the one on the next play. An illegal procedure penalty pushed the Hawks back to the six yard line. The Hawks were stopped on back to back plays and settled for a 19-yard field goal by
Michael Klotz to take a 3-0 lead.
QU continued to build momentum as
Clayton Cole intercepted a pass on the Cardinals fourth play from scrimmage. Cole returned the interception 16 yards to the William Jewell 37.
The Hawks took advantage, scoring on a touchdown run by
Theo Hopkins to take a 10-0 lead with just over seven minutes to play in the first quarter.
William Jewell responded with a methodical 11 play, 75 yard drive to cut the Hawks lead to 10-7.
2nd Quarter
QU answered with a scoring drive of their own. Quarterback
Andrew Rund completed 5-6 passes, including a 32-yard touchdown pass to
Jordan Smith to give the Hawks a 17-7 lead midway through the second quarter.
The Hawks defense forced a punt on the Jewell ensuing possession. A 47-yard return by
Shane Barrett gave the Hawks the ball in William Jewell territory with 6:09 remaining in the first half.
Andrew Rund took another shot and completed a pass to
Jordan Smith for a 38-yard completion on the first place of the drive. On the next play, Rund found Smith again for a eight-yard touchdown. The Hawks now held a 23-7 lead over the Cardinals.
William Jewell marched down to the QU 31 and faced a 3rd and four. After an incompletion, the Cardinals elected to go for a fourth down conversion in QU territory. Another incompletion gave the Hawks the ball back just before the half.
The Hawks ran out the remaining 2:28 of the half and led William Jewell 23-7.
3rd Quarter
Three straight punts gave the Cardinals the ball back on the 50-yard line. William Jewell cut into the Hawks lead with a field goal with around eight minutes to play in the third quarter.
On the following possession,
Andrew Rund was intercepted on a long pass down to the William Jewell seven-yard line and gave the Cardinals the ball back.
The Hawks defense held the Cardinals in check and forced a three and out.
Following the defensive stop, the Hawks were unable to gain a first down and punted right back to the Cardinals.
4th Quarter
QU's defense again stepped up by forcing a turnover on downs in the start of the fourth quarter. With the ball in QU territory, the Hawks forced a pair of incompletions to give the ball back to the QU offense.
After 23 first half points, the Hawks offense went stagnant and punted again on the following possession to give William Jewell the ball with 11:13 to play in the game.
William Jewell cut into the Hawks lead with a 14 play, 69 yard drive capped by a one yard rushing touchdown. The Cardinals scored after a four minute drive to cut the QU lead to 23-17.
The Hawks took over with 6:41 to play in the game, holding on to a six-point lead. QU used three minutes on their drive but punted again, giving the ball to William Jewell the ball back with 3:40 to play in the game.
Jewell pushed the ball deep into the Hawks territory, looking to take the lead. With the ball at the QU 32 yard line, the Hawks defense made its stand. Three straight incompletions resulted in a turnover on downs with 46 seconds to play in the game.
The Hawks ran out the remainder of the game clock to secure the 23-17 win.
