Hawks Split On First Day Of QU Invitational

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team went 1-1 on the opening day of the 2017 QU Invitational Tournament Friday (Sept 8.). The Hawks knocked off previously undefeated Minnesota State-Moorhead in straight sets, rebounding from a loss to Northwest Missouri earlier in the day.  
QU got off to a tough start, falling to the Bearcats of Northwest Missouri 25-20, 25-15, 25-23.  

The Hawks fell behind early in the first set, trailing 17-7.  The Hawks battled back tying the first set up 18-18 behind four consecutive attack errors by Northwest. 

A pair of kills by Hallie Sydney sealed the first set for the Bearcats, giving them the early 1-0 lead. 

Quincy fell behind again the second set and the couldn't dig their way out of the early hole.  Northwest used a seven point run to hold a firm grasp on the second set, winning 25-15. 

QU came out quickly in the third set, leading 6-3 over the Bearcats. Northwest used a 11-2 run to retake the lead over the Hawks.  

QU wouldn't go quietly despite trailing 21-14 late in the third set.   The Hawks trimmed the lead to 24-23 but a kill by Maddy Bruder of Northwest clipped the Hawks comeback attempt.  

In the second match of the day, the Hawks took on Minnesota State-Moorhead.  Moorhead came into the match with a unblemished 5-0 record.  

The Hawks were unfazed and Jessica Licurgo (Goodyear, AZ/ Sandra Day O'Connor) and Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, MI/ Fenton) set the early tone for QU. 

The seniors both collected multiple kills in the first set and the Hawks defeated the Dragons 25-18.  

Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, WI/ Denmark) started the second set off with a service ace to keep the momentum rolling for the Hawks.  

With the score reading 4-2 in favor of Quincy, Bekah Raebel (Waterford, WI/ Waterford Union) collected back to back kills to give the Hawks and early 7-2 lead.  

QU never looked back and won the second set 25-13.

It was back and forth action between the Hawks and the Dragons in the third set.  

The Hawks lead 21-19 before Lucy Grenda (Westfield, IN/ Westfield) added a kill to give QU a 22-19 lead.  Three straight errors by Minnesota State gave the Hawks a 3-0 victory.  

The Hawks play two more matches Saturday (Sept 9.) against McKendree and Wayne State. 

With the win, it gave head coach Abby Moser the first win in her coaching career.
