QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team defeated nationally ranked Lindenwood University 1-0 Sunday (Sept.3).
The Hawks lone goal came on a penalty kick taken by senior captain Chris McArthur (St. Louis, MO/CBC) in the 82nd minute of action.
The penalty kick was rewarded to the Hawks because of a handball in the box on a shot from Conner Sendobry (St. Louis, MO/CBC).
QU held a majority of the possession for the remaining seven minutes of play to close out the victory.
The Hawks and the Lions were deadlocked at 0-0 at the end of 45 minutes of play.
In the second half, the Hawks offense applied constant pressure to the #17 Lions defense. The Hawks offense put up 10 shots in the second half, two of which hit the crossbar and a third hit the left post.
Physical play also became a factor in the second half and gave the Hawks an advantage after the 67th minute of action.
Gabriel Jamies of Lindenwood was issued his second yellow card of the game, resulting in a red card which forced the Lions to play a man down for the remaining 23 minutes.
With just under 10 minutes to play, QU set up for a corner kick. After a deflection was played to Sedobry, his shot hit a Lindenwood defender's hand and the Hawks were awarded their penalty kick.
McArthur buried his kick into the back of the net and gave the Hawks their first win of the 2017 season.
Nate Griffin made three saves for the Hawks and picked up his 25th career win in goal for QU.
The Hawks will be back in action Friday (Sept. 8) against Truman State in their first GLVC match of the season.
