Football Falls in Season Opener to Nationally Ranked MWSU

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University football team fell to Midwestern State University Thursday (Aug 31.) 53-6.  Midwestern State (1-0) came into the contest ranked 24th in the country.  

The Hawks fell behind 7-0 on the Mustangs second possession of the game on a touchdown run by Vincent Jackson.  

The running game was the focus for Midwestern State.  The Mustangs were able to accumulate 468 yards of rushing against the Hawks (0-1).  

Midwestern State extended its lead to 14-0 after another Vincent Jackson touchdown run.  At the end of the first half the Mustangs lead 28-0.

The Hawks offense threatened in the start of the third quarter. Making it down to the Midwestern 17 before the Hawks were stopped on a fourth and seven after Andrew Rund's (St. Louis, MO / Saint Louis Priory) pass fell incomplete.  

At the end of the third quarter the Mustangs extended their lead to 31-0 after a field goal at the midway point in the quarter.  

Vincent Jackson rushed for his third touchdown to make the lead 38-0.  The Hawks would get on the board after a 97 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jordan Smith (Elgin, IL / Elgin).  

The Hawks PAT was blocked and returned for a two point conversion and the score stood at 40-6. 

Two more touchdowns for MWSU would complete the scoring and the Hawks fell to the Mustangs 53-6. 

Andrew Rund led the Hawks with 139 yards of total offense. Chris Harris (Springfield, IL / Sacred Heart Griffin) rushed for 62 yards on 20 carries.  

Keenan Stegall (Alton, IL / Alton) and Theo Hopkins (Chicago, IL / Leo) both had eight tackles for the Hawks defense.  

The Hawks are back in Quincy with their first home game of the season Saturday (Sept 9.) against Alderson Broddus.
