Hawks, Panthers Split Two Pitcher's Duels

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team split a pair of pitcher's duels, falling to Drury, 2-0, in Game 1 of a doubleheader before beating the Panthers, 2-1, in Game 2 on Sunday (April 2) in Springfield, Mo.

With runs at a premium, junior Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg) kept the Panthers (17-18, 5-7 GLVC) in check over the first six innings.

The Hawks (11-15, 5-7 GLVC) opened the scoring in the second inning as junior Abby Burton (Springfield, Ill./Glenwood) singled to start the inning and eventually scored on a two-out single by sophomore Dana Walsh (Wonder Lake, Ill./McHenry).

Griskell worked around a leadoff double in the second, then got out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth by forcing Rachael Michaelis to line into a double play.

Quincy added a crucial insurance run in the seventh as junior Raigen Schwartz (Walnut Hill, Ill./Centralia/Kaskaskia CC) singled with one out and scored on a two-out RBI single by senior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.).

In the bottom of the seventh, two Drury batters drew walks and Dominique Salinas contributed a two-out RBI single that put runners on second and third and trimmed QU's lead to 2-1. Griskell then struck out Kaelie Smith to end the game. Smith entered the at-bat hitting .355 on the season.

Griskell (8-6) earned the win, giving up just one run on five hits. She struck out a season-high eight batters in the complete game effort. Destiny Bolen (8-8) took the loss for the Panthers, allowing two runs on seven hits.

Greene was the only QU player with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

In Sunday's opener, the only runs came in the bottom of the first as the Panthers scored on back-to-back doubles and tacked on a second run with the help of an error.

After that inning, junior starter Meghan Quirk (Minooka, Ill.) gave up just two hits – leadoff singles in the fourth and fifth innings – but the Hawks could not get their lineup going against Jessica Kjeldgaard.

The Hawks scattered seven hits in the game, but stranded nine runners on the bases. QU left the bags loaded in the sixth as Greene led off with a single, followed by sophomore Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) getting hit by a pitch and junior Jessica Poore (Grover, Mo./Eureka/SIUE) drawing a one-out walk. Senior Kaylee Jones (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine CC) then grounded into a 3-2 fielder's choice before senior Samantha Goble (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Mt. Pleasant) flied out to end the inning.

Quirk (1-3) pitched well, but took the loss for the second straight day, giving up just two runs on four hits in six innings. She walked three and struck out four. Kjeldgaard (9-10) earned the win with the complete game shutout.

Greene and Farbak had two hits apiece to lead the QU offense.

The Hawks will have Monday off before returning to the field on Tuesday (April 4) for a GLVC twinbill at Truman State. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
