Hawks Knock Off Greyhounds In Tight Game

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team completed a weekend sweep of Great Lakes Valley Conference play with an impressive 89-82 win over visiting Indianapolis on Saturday (Feb. 4) afternoon at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (20-4, 10-3 GLVC) have now won five in a row and stopped a string of nine wins in 10 games for the Greyhounds (12-9, 9-4 GLVC). Quincy remains one game ahead of Truman State (17-6, 9-4 GLVC) atop GLVC West.

Quincy reached the 20-win plateau for the 20th time in program history. It is the fastest the Hawks have reached 20 wins in a season under 14th-year head coach Marty Bell, who has led QU to five 20-win seasons, including last season's 20-10 mark.

On Saturday, the Hawks gutted out a first half that saw five tie scores and 14 lead changes as Quincy took a 46-43 lead into the locker room. Sophomore wing Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central/Lindenwood) scored 10 of his 15 points in the first half.

The second half continued to go back-and-forth until the Hawks took control in the middle of the period.

Eric Davidson finished a three-point play to tie the game at 60-60 with 12:06 to play. The Hawks then scored the next five points on a 3-pointer by senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) and a mid-range floater by senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast). That started a run that saw the Hawks score on six of eight possessions as they took a 73-64 lead. McGaughey had a monster alley-oop slam off Senor's lob during that stretch and Hinton capped the run with a layup from McGaughey.

After a few empty possessions, the Hawks went back to their bread and butter – senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis./Kirkwood CC), who scored the next six points as the Greyhounds had no answer for the Hawks' post presence. His pass to cutting senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan) gave the Hawks an 81-73 lead with 1:18 to play.

Tagarelli made six free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory. He finished with a season-high 34 points on 10-for-17 shooting. He was 14-for-15 from the free throw line and added eight rebounds, three steals and two assists.

McGaughey had 21 points, eight rebounds and three steals while Hinton scored 15 points and collected five boards off the bench. Senor had nine points, six assists and three steals as Quincy had a season-best 14 thefts in the game.

Davidson led the Greyhounds with 22 points while Jimmy King finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

The Hawks will look for their sixth straight win on Thursday (Feb. 9) as they hit the road for a GLVC contest against UW-Parkside. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. in Wisconsin.
