Hawks Rally For 96-86 Win On Senior Day

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team earned a hard-fought, 96-86 win at Pepsi Arena on Senior Day, Saturday (Feb. 18) over William Jewell in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

The Hawks (23-5, 13-4 GLVC) had to rally from a 12-point deficit early in the second half to beat the Cardinals (8-17, 4-13 GLVC), who held a 50-43 lead at halftime. QU limited William Jewell to just 36 points in the second half.

Quincy inched one step closer to a GLVC West Division title and the No. 2 seed in the GLVC Tournament with the win. The Hawks' biggest hurdle comes Thursday (Feb. 23) when they travel to second-place Truman State (12-5 GLVC), which is just one game behind the Hawks.

On Saturday, the Hawks struggled defensively in the first half as William Jewell worked the ball inside and out, shooting 59 percent (20-for-34) from the floor and hitting seven 3-pointers. Quincy had no answer for wing Matt Lassen, who scored 19 points, and center Emil Ostafiicuic, who added 10 in the half.

Senior guard Grant Meyer (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) kept the Hawks in the game, hitting three 3-pointers in the first six minutes and finishing the half with 13 points.

Senior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Waunakee, Wis./Kirkwood CC), who battled foul trouble for most of the afternoon, had two put-backs in the final 80 seconds before halftime to cut Jewell's lead to seven at the break.

The Cardinals scored the first five points of the second half before the Hawks woke up defensively and began applying relentless ball pressure. Quincy forced 10 steals in the second half, including three by senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) and two each from Meyer and senior guard Von Washington III (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Central/Western Michigan).

Senor had five layups in a three-plus minute stretch that helped Quincy cut the deficit to one on three separate occasions. Senior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) also converted a three-point play in that stretch.

Despite cutting it to one point, the Cardinals continued to maintain the lead, building it back to five points, 73-67, with 10:34 remaining.

Senor then drained a 3-pointer before Patrick Whelan connected on a mid-range jumper to make it 75-70.

The Hawks then held the Cardinals without a field goal over a six-plus minute stretch. Quincy grabbed its first lead of the half on McGaughey's layup with 7:28 to play that followed a transition dunk off a feed from Senor.

Tagarelli scored a three-point play with 7:02 left and QU's lead went to 79-75. It was still a three-point game, 83-80, after a triple by Larry Fitzgerald, but junior Bobby Frasco (Mt. Prospect, Ill./Prospect/Buffalo) started a 9-1 run with a 3-pointer as Quincy pushed its lead to double-digits in the final minute. The Hawks went 6-for-6 at the line in the final 32 seconds.

The lead allowed head coach Marty Bell the opportunity to sub out his seniors and give them a standing ovation in their final regular season game at Pepsi Arena.

McGaughey led the Hawks with 22 points on 9-for-14 shooting. Senor chipped in 19 points and seven assists, going 8-for-12 from the field. Tagarelli added 18 points and a team-high six rebounds. Meyer (13 points, five assists) and sophomore wing Marcus Hinton (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central/Lindenwood) (11 points, five rebounds) also reached double figures.

Lassen led five Cardinals in double figures with 25 points. Whelan scored 16 points and handed out four assists while Jorge Perez-Laham had 14 points, five rebounds and six assists.

The Cardinals shot 57 percent (34-for-60) from the field while Quincy hit at a 54 percent (37-for-68) clip. WJC hit 11 3-pointers.

The Hawks will return to the floor on Thursday (Feb. 23) at 7:30 p.m. at Truman State in Kirksville, Mo. A win would clinch a West Division championship and the No. 2 seed in the GLVC Tournament.
