Last Second Shot Leads Fort Wayne In Win Over Hawks

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team gave Division I Fort Wayne all they could handle in Saturday's (Nov. 25) exhibition contest in Fort Wayne Indiana. 

A last second layup gave the Mastodons a 73-72 victory over the Hawks. 

QU maintained control for most of the game as the Hawks were led by senior Anika Webster who poured in a game high 29 points.  

The Hawks fell behind 20-18 in the first quarter but responded by outscoring the Mastodons in the second quarter.  The Hawks scored five points in the final minute to take a 33-30 lead into the half.  Jessie Rabas three-pointer and a pair of free throws by Julia Ruzevich gave the Hawks the lead after the first half.  

The back and forth battle between the Hawks and Mastodons continued throughout the third quarter. 

QU held a six-point lead with 4:55 remaining in the third quarter. Fort Wayne battled back to take the lead at 46-45 with just under two minutes to play in the quarter.  

With three seconds remaining in the third, Julia Ruzevich made a pair of free throws to tie the game headed into the fourth quarter.  

The Hawks came out firing in the fourth quarter and held a seven point lead with 3:39 left to play.  Webster led the Hawks with 11 points in the first seven minutes of the fourth.  

Fort Wayne clawed back into the game and cut the Hawks lead to 72-71 with 17 seconds remaining. 

After a pair of missed free throws, the Mastodons took possession with 11 seconds to play.  

A layup with one second remaining gave Fort Wayne the 73-72 win.  

Webster's 29 points came on 8-14 shooting and a perfect 10-10 from the foul line.  Alexa Low and Taylor Hickey both added 10 points for QU. 

The Hawks travel to Rockhurst November 30th for their first GLVC matchup of the season.
