Second Quarter Dooms Hawks at UMSL

QUINCY, Ill. – Missouri-St. Louis used a strong second quarter to build a 10-point halftime lead that held up against the Quincy University women's basketball team as the Tritons topped the Hawks, 57-47, on Thursday (Jan. 19) night at the Mark Twain Building in St. Louis.

The Hawks (4-14, 1-7 GLVC) led by a 9-2 margin early in Thursday's game, getting two early jumpers from senior guard Nikia Edom (Romeoville, Ill./Plainfield East/Murray State) before senior forward Cha Cha Williams (Bolingbrook, Ill./Bolingbrook/Seton Hill) capped the run with three straight points.

UMSL pulled ahead, 12-11, at the first quarter buzzer on a steal and layup by Jordan Boyce. The Tritons then hit four 3-pointers in the second quarter to take a 35-25 lead into halftime.

The Hawks were not able to make up ground in the third quarter, despite holding the Tritons (8-8, 3-5 GLVC) to just 31 percent (4-for-13) shooting in the stanza. Quincy got as close as eight points in the second half, but could not get into an offensive rhythm.

The Hawks shot 38 percent (18-for-47) in the game, but still held UMSL to a 36 percent (19-for-53) mark. Missouri-St. Louis owned a 36-32 advantage on the boards and led on points in the paint, 28-18.

Edom and sophomore wing Jessie Rabas (De Pere, Wis.) paced the Hawks with eight points each. Williams and freshman post Alexa Low (Beavercreek, Ohio) chipped in six points apiece. Laura Szorenyi led all scorers with 20 points for the home team.

The Hawks will return to the floor on Saturday (Jan. 21) at 1 p.m. when they take on Maryville in St. Louis.
