Hawks Sweep Maryville to Cap Home Tournament

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team salvaged a split in Saturday (Sept. 10) action at the QU Tournament at Pepsi Arena, sweeping Maryville in nonconference action after dropping a three-set match to Cedarville earlier in the day.

The Hawks (4-4) knocked off their conference foe in straight sets, 25-17, 25-22, 25-23, in the nightcap of a two-day event at Pepsi Arena that saw six teams play 10 matches. Earlier Saturday, Cedarville took all three sets from the Hawks, 27-25, 27-25, 25-23.

Sophomore outside Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark) was Quincy's representative on the all-tournament team after recording a double-double in all four matches of the event. She averaged 13.3 kills and 15.5 digs per match.

The Hawks open Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Friday (Sept. 16) when they travel to McKendree for a matchup with the Bearcats. First serve is set for 7 p.m.

Quincy def. Maryville – 25-17, 25-22, 25-23

The Hawks bounced back from their earlier defeat and soundly handled the Saints in front of a strong student crowd at Pepsi Arena.

Quincy's offense rolled all night as the Hawks hit a season-high .281 from the floor. Only once all last season did the Hawks eclipse that mark.

QU held Maryville (1-7) to a minus-.033 mark in Set 1 with the Hawks compiling three blocks in the frame. Sophomore Stephanie Mizeur (Riverton, Ill.) finished the set with a kill.

In Set 2, the Hawks had to dig out of a 4-0 hole, eventually tying the game at 7-7. The set would stay tight with the Saints leading 16-15. Quincy would respond with a 7-0 run with sophomore Marissa Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan) on the serve. Maryville quickly fired back five straight points, but kills by McMonagle and senior Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian) and a ball-handling error gave QU the win.

The Hawks had to hold off a late charge by Maryville in Set 3, but they were able to earn the sweep, their second of the season.

Lindemulder (.429) and McMonagle (.159) led the Hawks with 11 kills each while junior Bobbie Eastman (Fenton, Mich.) tacked on 10 kills (.318).

Junior Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) led the back row with 17 digs and junior setter Miranda Rodriguez (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) kept the offense flowing with 32 assists.

Cedarville def. Quincy – 27-25, 27-25, 25-23

The Hawks dropped three straight close games to the Yellow Jackets (7-2), who went 4-0 on the weekend.

McMonagle led the Hawks with 12 kills and 15 digs. She was the only QU player to total double-digit kills. Shores added 16 digs on the back row, while Rodriguez (23 assists) and freshman Sara Rathbun (Stanford, Ill./Olympia) (10 assists) shared setting duties.

The teams were even in blocks, 8-8, and the Yellow Jackets out-hit the Hawks, .176 to .129 for the match.
