Lady Hawks Drop Two Games On Final Day in Florida

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University softball team completed its seven-day, 12-game trip to the NTC Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. on Tuesday (March 7) as the Hawks dropped a pair of games to Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams. QU fell to Saginaw Valley State, 10-2, before dropping a 5-0 decision to Grand Valley State.

Against Saginaw, the Hawks were not able to take advantage of leadoff walks in the first two innings, grounding into a double play in the first inning.

The Cardinals (1-3) took the lead in the third inning as Meredith Rousse pounded a grand slam off QU starter Emily Griskell (Oak Forest, Ill./Carl Sandburg).

Senior Samantha Ledbetter (Tuscola, Ill./Olney Central) cut the lead in half in the fourth with a two-run blast that scored junior Lindsey Greene (Ottawa, Ill.), who drew a one-out walk. QU had a chance to cut it to 4-3 on a double by senior Rebecca Powers (Manchester, Mo./Kennedy Catholic), but sophomore Karli McGaughlin (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) was thrown out trying to score.

Saginaw got the runs back in the bottom of the fourth and ended the game by scoring four runs in the sixth inning.

Griskell (0-1) was tagged with the loss allowing six runs, just two earned, on 10 hits in five innings. She struck out three and walked one. Sarah Vrabel earned the win for the Cardinals.

Ledbetter reached base three times with a home run and two walks.

Grand Valley State starter Allison Lipovsky kept the Quincy lineup off balance in Tuesday's finale. She allowed just two hits and struck out 12 while improving her record to 3-0.

The Lakers (7-0) got all the offense they needed in the first inning with two runs off Quincy starter Kristen Skala (Westmont, Ill.). Skala (2-3) tossed a complete game, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits. She walked two and struck out eight.

Quincy's hits came in the first – a single by freshman Jackie Farbak (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln-Way) – and in the fourth – a bunt single by Ledbetter.

The Hawks will now travel back to Quincy and open the Great Lakes Valley Conference season on Saturday (March 12) against McKendree at the Mart Heinen Softball Complex.
