Hawks Fall to Truman in Regular Season Finale, 83-82

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team dropped an 83-82 decision to Truman State in the teams' regular season finale on Thursday (Feb. 25) night at Pepsi Arena.

The Hawks (18-9, 12-6 GLVC) earned the No. 7 seed in the GLVC Tournament and will play No. 10-seed McKendree (13-13, 6-12 GLVC) in the first round on Sunday (Feb. 28) at Pepsi Arena. Tip-off is set for 3:15 p.m.

Season ticket holders can purchase advance tickets for the game by stopping by the athletic office in the University's Health & Fitness Center from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. or 4-6 p.m. on Friday (Feb. 26). Season ticket holders can also call the athletic department from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. on Friday at (217) 228-5290 to reserve tickets. Tickets for the general public can be purchased at the door on Sunday.

Thursday's game was tied at 80-80 before Andrew Vander Zwaag knocked down a 3-pointer with 1:15 to play to give the Bulldogs an 83-80 lead.

On the next possession, the Hawks went to their best weapon on Thursday, junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Waunakeee/Kirkwood CC), who drew a foul in the post and made both free throws.

Senior wing Godson Eneogwe (Chicago, Ill./Maine West/Illinois Central) then got a steal during a tie-up to give the ball back to Quincy. Junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West) had the ball stripped away.

The Bulldogs (20-8, 12-6 GLVC) ran the clock under 10 seconds before Billy Daniel had his layup smashed against the backboard by McGaughey and the Hawks gained possession on the sideline with 7.5 seconds left.

Senior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) went the length of the floor, but Cory Myers stripped the ball near the elbow and TSU recovered the loose ball with 0.5 seconds remaining. Myers missed both free throws, but Eneogwe's 85-foot heave missed everything as the Hawks dropped just their second home GLVC game of the season.

Four of Quincy's six GLVC losses have come by a combined seven points.

The Hawks trailed early in the game as the Bulldogs led by as many as six points in the first half. QU used a 7-0 run to re-gain the lead, 18-17 with 11:57 remaining in the half on a Senor 3-pointer.

Back-to-back threes by senior guard Jordan Wilson (Florissant, Mo./Hazelwood Central) pushed the Hawks' lead up to seven points, 29-22, with 8:37 in the first half. Senor's triple gave QU a 45-33 advantage late in the half and the Hawks took a 47-39 lead into the intermission.

The Hawks led for a majority of the second half as well. Vander Zwaag hit one of his seven 3-pointers to cut QU's lead to 71-70 with 7:23 to play before a Tagarelli layin stopped a 6-0 Truman run.

The teams then traded the lead several times before Vander Zwaag's final 3-pointer gave the Bulldogs the lead for good.

Tagarelli led the Hawks with 23 points and 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Wilson scored 13 points in 13 minutes off the bench, hitting four 3-pointers. Senor and Eneogwe had 11 points each and senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods) scored 10 points to go with four steals. McGaughey matched a career high with 15 rebounds.

Vander Zwaag led the Bulldogs with 24 points in 23 minutes off the bench. He was 7-for-8 from 3-point range. Billy Daniel scored 16 of his 19 points in the first half.

The Hawks shot 45.5 percent (30-for-66) from the field while the Bulldogs hit 45.1 percent (32-for-71) of their shots. The Bulldogs also hit 12 threes in the game. QU won the battle on the glass, 47-34.

If the Hawks advance on Sunday, they will play Friday (March 4) in the GLVC Tournament quarterfinal at Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo.
