QUINCY, Ill. — The Quincy Hawks women's basketball team traveled to Liberty, Missouri to open conference play against the Cardinals of William Jewell. The Cardinals took the early lead as they knocked down four 3-pointers in the first quarter. The Cardinals lead 15-9 after one quarter of play.
The Hawks opened the scoring in the second quarter as Selina Barnes (Colorado Springs, CO/ Sierra) knocked down a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 15-12. Katie Finn answered with a 3-point jumper of her own to extend the lead back to 18-12 for William Jewell (3-2, 1-0 GLVC). Rachel Ruzevich (Orland Park, IL / Carl Sandburg) cut the lead to five with just under two minutes remaining in the first half. William Jewell extended the lead back to seven on the next possession and the Cardinals took a 29-22 into the half.
The Cardinals began the second half on an 8-2 run in the first three minutes of the third quarter. Nikia Edom (Romeoville, IL / Plainfield East) hit a 3-pointer to trim the lead to 11 with 6:51 remaining in the quarter. William Jewell maintained at least an eight-point lead for the remainder of third quarter. Taylor Hickey (Keokuk, IA / Burlington Notre Dame) hit another 3-pointer for the Hawks with four seconds remaining to again cut the lead to 11.
A tough Cardinal defense kept the Hawks 3-point shooters to just 4-21 shooting from behind the 3-point arc. Nikia Edom and Anika Webster (Springfield, IL / Springfield) both scored 10 points but the Hawks fell to the Cardinals 61-43.
Quincy falls to 1-6, 0-1 in the GLVC. The Hawks will take on Rockhurst Saturday (December 3rd) in Kansas City in their second GLVC match up of the season.
