Hawks Taken Down By Bearcats, 35-17

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team fell behind in the first quarter and was never able to take the lead as McKendree pulled away in the second half for a 35-17 win on Saturday (Nov. 5) afternoon at QU Stadium.

Senior wide receiver Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick/Monroe College) caught a 26-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter to become Quincy's all-time leader in touchdown receptions with 32. The touchdown was his 13th of the season, breaking the single-season record. Both records were previously held by Justin Dickens (2010-13).

McKendree (7-3, 5-2 GLVC) scored on its first two possessions of the game to take a 14-0 lead over the Hawks.

Quincy (5-5, 3-4 GLVC) started a long drive at the end of the first quarter and freshman Nathan Kewney (Quincy, Ill.) capped it with a 21-yard field goal. The drive lasted 19 plays and drew 8:37 off the clock as the Hawks converted three fourth downs.

The Bearcats answered with a 12-play, 65-yard drive that stretched their lead to 21-3, capped by the second touchdown catch by Colton Lockwood.

The Hawks took advantage of good field position late in the first half and converted on two more fourth downs to get the ball inside McKendree territory. On second down, redshirt-sophomore quarterback Robbie Kelley (Rochester, Ill.) hit Poindexter in stride on a post for his record-breaking 26-yard touchdown that cut the deficit to 21-10 heading into halftime.

On their first drive of the second half, the Hawks marched to the McKendree 3-yard line, mostly by dominating up front with the running game. Redshirt-junior running back Chris Harris (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) chewed up 70 yards on the drive, but the Hawks stalled on four straight plays with goal-to-go.

The teams exchanged punts before redshirt-junior cornerback Adehkeem Brown (St. Louis, Mo./Ladue) picked off a Reece Metcalf pass and returned it to McKendree's 9-yard line. Three plays later, Harris bruised his way into the end zone to cut the deficit to 21-17 with 3:47 left in the third quarter.

The Bearcats responded with a 90-yard drive, capped by Shayeen Edwards' 16-yard dash to the end zone.

Derrick Curry's 64-yard punt return closed the game's scoring in the fourth quarter as Quincy's offense was held scoreless in the final stanza.

The Bearcats outgained the Hawks, 333-282, picking up 206 yards on the ground. Quincy averaged just 3.5 yards per play, but owned an eight-minute advantage in time of possession. The Hawks were 3-for-19 on third down, but 5-for-7 on fourth down. The Bearcats converted six of their first eight third downs, but the Hawks stopped them on their last six conversion attempts.

Harris led the Hawks on the ground with 110 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries. He averaged five yards per carry. Kelley was 15-for-25 for 147 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He was sacked a season-high six times.

Poindexter caught six passes for 94 yards and a touchdown. He is now just 56 yards from the 3,000-yard mark in his three-year career at Quincy.

Edwards ran for 129 yards and averaged 5.2 yards per rush to lead McKendree's ground game. Metcalf was 11-for-22 for 127 yards, two touchdowns and one pick.

Sophomore linebacker Cody Leonard (Carrollton, Ill.) led the Hawks with 11 tackles (nine solo), including 3.5 tackles for loss. Redshirt-sophomore linebacker T.J. Daniels (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis University HS) added nine stops.

The Hawks will close the season next Saturday (Nov. 12) at 1 p.m. when they take on Missouri S&T.
