QU Plays Indiana State Close, Sycamores Pull Away in Fourth

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's basketball team led late in the third quarter of an exhibition game at Division I Indiana State, but the Sycamores outscored Quincy in the fourth quarter to pull out a 69-55 win on Friday (Nov. 4) night in Terre Haute, Ind.
 
The Hawks led by as many as seven points, 13-6, with 4:38 remaining in the first quarter after a 3-pointer by junior guard Megan Wienstroer (Okawville, Ill.). QU still maintained a two-point lead, 19-17 after the first quarter in which it shot 5-for-9 (56 percent) from 3-point range.
 
The Sycamores held a two-point lead at halftime as the Hawks held the home team to 40 percent (12-for-30) shooting in the first half.
 
Indiana State led through the early portions of the second half, going up by as many as eight points before the Hawks went on a 10-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Taylor Hickey (Keokuk, Iowa/Burlington Notre Dame), to take a 40-38 lead with 1:49 left in the third quarter. A layup by Wendi Bibbins gave Indiana State a 44-42 lead going into the fourth.
 
The Sycamores, who shot 43 percent through the first three quarters, caught fire in the fourth quarter, shooting 10-for-15 (66.7 percent) from the floor.
 
Wienstroer led all scorers with 17 points on 6-for-11 shooting, including a 4-for-6 mark from long distance. Junior forward Anika Webster (Springfield, Ill.) and freshman guard Jessica Merino (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) added nine points apiece.
 
The Hawks led the Sycamores on the glass, 33-32, and held a 15-3 edge in second chance points. QU managed 11 assists on 16 made field goals. The Hawks shot 34 percent from the field and 38 percent (8-for-21) from 3-point range.
 
Indiana State dominated Quincy in transition, 14-3, and in the paint, 42-8. Tierra Webb paced the Sycamores, who went 13-17 last season, with 14 points.
 
The game concluded the exhibition season for the Hawks, who will start the regular season on Nov. 12 at Grand Valley State in the GLVC/GLIAC Challenge in Allendale, Mich. Tip-off is set for 4:30 p.m. CT.
