Hawks Clinch GLVC Tourney Berth Despite Defeat

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team qualified for the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament for the first time since 2011 despite a five-set defeat, 23-25, 27-25, 23-25, 25-7, 15-12, to William Jewell on Saturday (Nov. 12) afternoon in Liberty, Mo.

The Hawks (16-14, 10-8 GLVC) go into the tournament as the No. 4W seed and will take on the top seed in the East, No. 15 Lewis, on Friday (Nov. 18) at the East Side Centre in East Peoria, Ill. Time is still to be announced.

On Saturday, the Hawks won the first set after the Cardinals (12-20, 5-13 GLVC) came back from an eight-point deficit to take a 23-22 lead. Quincy scored the final three points with kills by seniors Kayla Hamilton (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) and Emily Lindemulder (Homer Glen, Ill./Chicago Christian) and a double block by Lindemulder and sophomore Lauren Nadler (Charleston, Ill.).

The Hawks fought of two set points in Set 2, but the Cardinals came away with the 27-25 win.

In Set 3, the Hawks led, 24-21, before William Jewell scored the next two points to cut it to 24-23, but a service error on the hosts gave Quincy the win.

A 25-7 defeat in the fourth set forced a fifth game between the teams. The Hawks scored the first point in the frame on an ace by sophomore Marissa Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas/Reagan), but the Cardinals then raced to a 7-3 lead.

The Hawks fought back and eventually took a 10-9 advantage after three hitting errors by the Cardinals. WJC scored the next three points, but the Hawks evened it at 12-12 on Lindemulder's kill and a hitting error by the Cardinals. William Jewell scored the next three points to seal the win, however.

Lindemulder led the Hawks with 14 kills (.440) to go with five blocks. Hamilton added 12 kills (.172) and Licurgo picked up 10 kills (.143), six digs, five blocks and three aces. Junior libero Rachel Shores (Huntley, Ill.) led the back row with 29 digs, while sophomore Taylor McMonagle (Green Bay, Wis./Denmark) added 22.

Junior Miranda Rodriguez (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Catholic) and freshman Sara Rathbun (Stanford, Ill./Olympia) shared the setting duties with 31 and 17 assists, respectively.
