Hawks Secure 2-1 Win Over Maryville Friday

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's soccer team scored the game-winning goal in the second half to secure a 2-1 win over visiting Maryville on Friday (Hawktober 21) night at Legends Stadium.

The Hawks (9-4-2, 7-4-2 GLVC) have now won four straight games as they look to creep into the NCAA Tournament picture with Sunday's contest at regionally-ranked Missouri-St. Louis looming.

Quincy took the lead against the Saints (9-7, 6-7 GLVC) in the 22nd minute off a corner kick by junior forward Artan Emini (Yorkville, Ill.). Junior defender Conner Sendobry (St. Louis, Mo./CBC/UW-Green Bay) had his header blocked by a Maryville defender, but senior midfielder Scott Ladi (Florissant, Mo./De Smet) was on top of the deflection and scored his first goal of the season. Sendobry now has two assists.

The Saints equalized in the 33rd minute as Pontus Gitselov made a long run down the right side and scored from just inside the penalty area.

The Hawks out-shot the Saints, 7-3, in the first half and managed a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.

In the 62nd minute, the Hawks netted the game-winner as senior forward Pete Condol (Mount Carmel, Ill.) played a perfect through-ball for sophomore forward Eddie Plesha (Normal, Ill./Normal Community), who cut inside in the box and beat the keeper for his sixth goal of the year. It was Condol's second assist.

The Hawks held off the Saints after that point to keep the 2-1 score intact.

The game was very physical as the teams combined for 33 fouls and seven yellow cards. Junior goalkeeper Nate Griffin (St. Louis, Mo./CBC) needed just one save to preserve the win.

The Hawks will return to the field on Sunday (Hawktober 23) at 2:30 p.m. when they travel to Missouri-St. Louis for a crucial GLVC game.
