Hawks Fall to Lions in QU Alumni Cup

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 3 Quincy University men's soccer team suffered their first loss of the season at the hand of Lindenwood University on Sunday (Sept. 6) night. Lindenwood finished the weekend as the winners of the Quincy University Alumni Cup presented by Green Light National going 2-0 with wins against No. 23 Drury University and No. 3 QU. The Lions claimed the QU Alumni Cup with a 3-1 win on Sunday.

The Lions (2-0) got on the board in the eighth minute on an unfortunate cross that deflected in by a QU (1-1) defender.

The Hawks later tied the game in the 25th minute. Jordan Stephens had a splendid run down the left wing that he finished with a cross to the head of Xhovani Dokaj. Dokaj finished the header at the back post to knot the game at 1-1.

Andre Hayne scored the goal of the tournament in the 32nd minute for the Lions. Hayne flipped through the air after a high long ball at the top of the box played in from Eduardo Spragge Campo. Hayne connected cleanly with the bicycle kick that finished top shelf in the back of the net.

Jose Sanchez added insurance in the 39th minute on a header sent in off a cross from Nijaz Muratovic.

The Hawks had a chance off the boot of Kyle Fraser that was stopped by Andrew Hamerlinck. The rebound came to Xhovani Dokaj who had his shot blocked just before halftime.

QU had a great chance in the 68th minute when Dokaj sent a corner into the box. It found the flying feet of Jordan Stephens, but a Lion defender cleared the ball off the line.

The Lions would withstand the Quincy attack for the final 20 minutes to come away with the 3-1 win.

Quincy will start their Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule on Friday, Sept. 11. QU will play host to the University of Missouri-St. Louis at Legends Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
