Hawks Take Carson-Newman To Five Sets in Opener

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team took 2014 NCAA Tournament team Carson-Newman to a fifth set in the season opener on Friday, but the Eagles turned away the Hawks, 3-2 (25-20, 22-25, 21-25, 25-23, 15-13).
 
Later Friday, Concordia-Portland defeated Quincy in straight sets, 25-11, 25-16, 25-19, to round out the first day of the GVSU Riverfront Laker Classic in Allendale, Mich.
 
In the first match against Carson-Newman, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season, the Hawks fell in the opening set before taking the next two. In Set 2, Quincy used a 4-0 run to take a 19-15 lead on its way to a 25-22 win. In the same point of Set 3, the Hawks scored three straight to take an 18-15 lead in a tightly-contested match.
 
The Eagles came back to win Set 4 to send the season opener to a decisive frame. Quincy opened the scoring Set 5 and led 7-5, but Carson-Newman reeled off five straight points, but QU was not able to tie the game again.
 
Quincy out-hit Carson-Newman, .201-.187 and were led by Bekah Raebel's 20 kills and a blistering .543 hitting percentage. Gianna Lincoln chipped in a double-double with 14 kills (.184) and 10 digs.
 
Rachel Shores led the back row with 24 digs and Cassandra Cahill dished out 53 assists to go with 14 digs for a double-double. Jessica Licurgo led the Hawks with four of QU's nine aces. Marissa Gonzalez and Taylor McMonagle each had 15 digs, the latter adding nine kills.
 
Molly Locke paced the Eagles with 27 kills and 20 digs, hitting .339 for the match.
 
Quincy struggled on the defensive end against Concordia-Portland, which hit .354 for the match. The Cavaliers held the Hawks to a .104 hitting percentage.
 
Emily Lindemulder led Quincy with seven kills with Miranda Rodriguez finishing with 14 assists. Shores added nine digs to lead the back row.
 
The Hawks are back in action on Saturday (Sept. 5) to take on Daemen (9 a.m. CT) and Ohio Dominican (1 p.m. CT) to round out the weekend's action in Michigan.
