Hawks Finish Strong in Exhibition Defeat at Northwestern

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University men's basketball team outscored Northwestern, 37-34, in the second half, but fell to the Wildcats, 80-64, in a season-opening exhibition in Evanston, Ill. on Thursday (Nov. 5) night.

The Hawks were strong defensively in the second half, limiting the Big Ten school to just 40 percent (12-for-30) shooting in the final 20 minutes. QU also turned the ball over just three times in the second half and finished with just nine for the game. The Hawks forced the Wildcats into 16 miscues.

Three Hawks scored 10 points to lead the offense – senior guard Thomas Jackson (Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati State), junior forward Joseph Tagarelli (Bayside, Wis./Kirkwood CC) and junior forward Evan McGaughey (Carthage, Ill./Illini West).

Northwestern scored the game's first eight points and led 13-2 just five minutes into the game. The 'Cats sank their first five shots from the field.

QU would trim the deficit to as few as seven points in the first half, 18-11, after Jackson's layup off a feed from senior forward Dalton Hoover (Pittsfield, Ill.).

The Hawks trailed, 46-27, at halftime before the defense picked up its intensity in the second half. The Wildcats, who hit 7-of-12 from 3-point range in the first half, knocked down just five treys on 13 attempts.

QU was competitive on the offensive glass, matching the Wildcats with 12 boards. Four of Quincy's offensive rebounds came from sophomore guard Bobby Frasco (Mt. Prospect, Ill./SUNY Buffalo), who finished with six points and seven boards in 17 minutes off the bench.

Eleven players scored for the Hawks as junior forward Scottie Bruxvoort (Mitchellville, Iowa/Prairie City Monroe) added eight as a reserve. Junior guard Herm Senor II (Springfield, Ill./Southeast) had seven points, four rebounds and a team-leading four assists.

Senior guard Nate Des Jardins (Peoria, Ill./Richwoods), freshman guard Trevor Meny (Palmyra, Mo.) and redshirt-freshman guard Ryan Daugherty (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) each hit a 3-pointer in the game. Senior forward DeVonta Crochrell (Collinsville, Ill.) also connected on his lone field goal try.
