Hawks Fall to Yellow Jackets in NCAA Regional Quarterfinal

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team ended their season in the NCAA Division II National Tournament for the second consecutive season. QU fell to Cedarville University 3-0 in the Midwest Regional Quarterfinals at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo. The Hawks were outshot 13-5 and CED had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

Nate Griffin made seven saves for the Hawks (12-7-2) as the Yellow Jackets (15-3-2) fired 11 shots on net. The Cedarville keeper, Paulo Pinto made three saves to earn a clean sheet.

Griffin made two diving saves in the first 15 minutes of play, but he gave up a rebound to the front of the net on his second save that bounced to Zachary Harris who deposited it into the net for the first goal of the game for the Yellow Jackets.

Cedarville sent a long ball to Jon Brown in transition who took a defender one-on-one with a step over and then shot between two defenders from 15 yards out to the near post to score in the 22nd minute.

A frenzy in front of the net almost resulted in a QU goal in the 30th minute, but Artan Emini's shot was blocked by a Cedarville defender.

Following halftime, Cedarville peppered Griffin in the 65th minute, when the QU keeper made two saves, but a rebound was deflected in by Jon Brown for his second goal of the game for the Yellow Jackets.

In the 82nd minute, a QU defender cleared a shot off the line from a Cedarville corner to keep the game at 3-0.

Pete Condol took a shot on net in the 86th minute, but Pinto made the save to keep the shutout.

The Yellow Jackets will play Rockhurst University at 1 p.m. on Saturday (Nov. 14) in the Midwest Regional Semifinals.
