Hawks Start Home Weekend with Sweep of Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team started their first home weekend in a month, and only home weekend in October, with a three set sweep of Maryville University on Friday (Oct. 9). QU served up seven aces in the match. Gianna Lincoln led the Hawks with three aces. MU finished the match with a .085 hitting percentage.

The Hawks (9-9, 4-4 GLVC) trailed early in the first set, but strung together two four-point rallies to take a 21-16 lead.

The Saints (6-11, 1-7 GLVC) mounted a comeback to pull within one point, 24-23, with the serve.

The Hawks finished off the first set with a big block from Taylor McMonagle and Emily Lindemulder.

The second set was tight throughout. With the score tied, 22-22, the Hawks scored two points on a kill by Taylor McMonagle followed by an attack error by the Saints. After a Saints point, Rachel Rush knocked home a kill to give the Hawks a 25-23 set two win.

The Hawks took an early 10-6 lead, but the Saints started to comeback to force a QU timeout as the Hawks had a 16-14 lead. The Saints went on to take a 19-18 lead after four straight attack errors by the Hawks.

QU calmed the storm with four straight points ending in a Miranda Rodriguez ace to take a 22-19 lead. 

With the Hawks leading 22-21, Emily Lindemulder slammed a kill. Gianna Lincoln served an ace to pull within one point of the sweep. Maryville took one point, but Taylor McMonagle finished with a kill to end the set and the match.

McMonagle led the Hawks with nine kills in the match. Rachel Rush recorded eight kills for QU. Miranda Rodriguez finished with 18 assists and nine digs. Rachel Shores had 22 digs to lead QU. Gianna Lincoln had six kills, three aces, and 16 digs.

The Hawks play host to the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday in Pepsi Arena. The match is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. The match will be Breast Cancer Awareness Night. Proceeds will be donated to Blessing Cancer Research Center.
