GAMEDAY CENTRAL: Hawks Visit 3-Time Champ UIndy

Quincy University Hawks (2-3, 2-2 GLVC) at University of Indianapolis Greyhounds (5-1, 3-0 GLVC)
Oct. 17, 2015 | 5 p.m. CT
Indianapolis, Ind. | Key Stadium

HEADING EAST: The Quincy University football team makes its way to Indianapolis this week to take on the Greyhounds at Key Stadium. The game is sandwiched between a pair of two-game homestands. The Hawks are coming off a last-second 24-21 defeat to William Jewell at QU Stadium last Saturday.

HALFWAY POINT: The Hawks have hit the halfway point in their 10-game schedule with a 2-3 record. Last year at this point, the Hawks were 2-3, but started a four-game winning streak in Game 6 that spurred a 4-2 finish to a campaign that saw them finish the year with a 6-5 record. QU's four straight wins came against Southwest Baptist, Saint Joseph's, William Jewell and Missouri S&T.

SERIES WITH THE 'HOUNDS: The Greyhounds have won all three all-time meetings between the teams, including a 42-20 decision last season at Flinn Stadium in Quincy. UIndy standout Reece Horn caught three straight touchdown passes to give the 'Hounds a 21-0 lead in the first half. The Hawks had that lead whittled down to 35-20 with UIndy facing a 3rd-and-16 early in the fourth quarter, but quarterback Connor Barthel hit Logan Young on a 44-yard pass to set up a touchdown that sealed the game. On the last trip to Key Stadium in 2013, the Hawks trailed the 'Hounds, 9-7, at halftime before Indy pulled away in the second half, 33-7. Indianapolis defeated Quincy, 35-7, in the teams' first meeting in 2012 in Illinois.

THE UINDY PROFILE: The Greyhounds have won all three Great Lakes Valley Conference championships and have a 25-1 all-time record in league play, their only defeat coming to William Jewell in last year's season finale. UIndy also played in the NCAA playoffs in 2012 and 2013 – the only GLVC school to do so. Barthel, a redshirt-senior, leads the UIndy offense, completing 69 percent of his passes for an average of 268 yards per game. Horn ranks third in the nation in receiving yards per game (128.5) and fourth in receptions per game (8.5). The 'Hounds boast the GLVC's second-best offense (425.2) and defense (343.8) by yardage standards. The 'Hounds have just one giveaway on the year.

THREE MORE MILESTONES: Fifth-year senior quarterback Nick Lonergan was already the program's all-time leader in completions, passing yards and touchdowns. He has now attempted more passes (978) than anyone in a QU uniform. Last week, he also threw his 50th career touchdown pass (now sitting at 51) and surpassed the 7,500-yard mark (7,511). Lonergan currently holds the all-time completion percentage mark (56.9) at QU. He ranks sixth among the active career leaders in NCAA Division II in passing yards. The Jacksonville, Ill. native is the most efficient passer in the GLVC (169.3) and ranks seventh in the nation in that category. He is also second in the country in yards per pass attempt (10.35).

BIG PLAYS: The passing game was exceptional at the outset of last Saturday's game as Lonergan went 3-for-4 for 65 yards on the opening drive, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to junior Eric Poindexter that gave QU a 7-0 lead. A gorgeous 43-yard strike from Lonergan to Poindexter early in the second quarter handed the Hawks a 14-7 lead. Poindexter made a fantastic catch, hauling in the pass in the front corner of the end zone with a defender draped on his hip.

STREAK CONTINUES: Sophomore running back Chris Harris scampered into the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown run in the first quarter last Saturday to give QU a 14-0 lead. Harris has now scored a rushing touchdown in his last seven games, dating back to last season. He has a touchdown in 14 of 16 career games. Last week, he rushed for 109 yards, marking the second time this season he has hit the century plateau. Harris has 1,372 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns in his career, the latter of which rank fourth on QU's all-time list.

POINDEXTER AGAIN: Poindexter remained Lonergan's best threat in the passing game as the Newport News, Va. native caught five passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns. It was the second straight week he had two touchdown catches. He is tied for 19th nationally with six touchdowns on the season. He is also eighth nationally and second in the GLVC in receiving yards per game (113.2). He has at least 89 receiving yards in all five games and has hit the 100-yard mark three times in 2015.

FILLING THE STAT SHEET: Sophomore Jacob Lounsberry was active from his defensive end position last week, totaling seven tackles (six solo) – including two for loss – a sack, an interception and a forced fumble. He picked off WJC quarterback Nick West off a deflected ball that he scooped with his hands just before the nose of the ball hit the ground. The play set up the Hawks in the red zone and led to Harris' eight-yard score that pushed QU's lead to 14-0.

DEFENSE IMPROVEMENT: The QU defense has surrendered just 40 points over the last two games combined and allowed a season-low 381 yards to William Jewell last week, including just 96 rushing yards. Unfortunately, 39 of those came on the final drive before Brandon Womack hit a 28-yard field goal to win the game as time expired.

NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT: The Hawks, in the season of their return to QU Stadium, have been chosen by the NCAA and the American Sports Network to have their Halloween game against visiting Truman State to broadcast live on national television. Kickoff for the game will now be at 11 a.m. to accommodate the TV schedule. The game will air on select Sinclair Broadcast Group syndicates across the country and will be offered to many regional sports networks. It has the potential to be seen in 94 million homes. The game will air locally on KHQA-TV 7.

GLVCSN: The athletic communications office is pleased to announce that each home game (except Halloween) will be broadcast live on the GLVC Sports Network at QUHawks.com/watch.
