No. 11 Hawks Score Three After Half to Survive Panthers

QUINCY, Ill. - The No. 11 Quincy University men's soccer team faced their toughest test of the season thus far on Sunday (Sept. 28) against Drury University.  QU trailed for the first time all season when DU scored on a free kick just outside the box in the first half.  The Hawks and Panthers played a physical game in an unusually hot late September afternoon match.  There were seven yellow cards issued in the contest (QU-4, DU-3).  The Hawks relied on heavy offensive pressure in the second half that equated to three goals to keep QU undefeated with a 3-2 win.

The No. 11 Hawks (9-0-0, 6-0-0 GLVC) were held in check offensively in the first half.  QU took four shots with none on net.

The Panthers (6-2-0, 4-2-0 GLVC) took four shots as well in the first half.  Their one shot on goal found its way into the net.  In the 21st minute, the Panthers were awarded a free kick just outside of the box when QU was issued a yellow card.  Alec Nagel converted the free kick to give DU a one goal lead.  The Panthers took that lead into halftime.

The Hawks came out hungry in the second half.  Taylor Reis connected with Jordan Roberts in the 60th minute on a pass that Roberts touched back to the middle of the field.  Roberts sent a low shot to the near post through the keeper's outstretched hands to put the Hawks on the board and tie the game at 1-1.  The goal was Roberts' ninth of the season.

The Panthers were awarded another free kick just to the right of the center of the goal from 20 yards out.  QU received another yellow to give DU the chance.  Alec Nagel converted again just under the crossbar to give the Panthers a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute.

In the 74th minute, Steve McAnany found Artan Emini at the top of the box.  Emini took one touch to settle the ball with his back to the net and turned to fire a bending strike just under the crossbar from 18 yards out to tie the game at 2-2.  The goal was Emini's second of the year.

The Panthers had a couple opportunities in the 77th minute.  DU sent a corner into the box that was headed on goal and saved by Drew Duncan (9-0-0).  DU had another opportunity less than a minute later with a free man in the box.  Duncan came out to contest the shot and forced the ball just wide of the net to earn a goal kick.

The Hawks countered in the 83rd minute.  Jordan Roberts sped up the left side of the field and drew two defenders toward him.  Roberts slid the ball through the two defenders to a wide open Xhovani Dokaj on the right side who finished to the far post from eight yards out for his eighth goal of the season.

The Hawk defense milked the clock and pulled off the come from behind win over the Panthers.

Drew Duncan made five saves in net.  Xhovani Dokaj's late goal earned him his fifth game-winning goal of the season.

The Panthers had 16 shots with seven on goal.  The Hawks totaled 13 shots and five on goal.

The Hawks will travel to Rockhurst University next Friday (Oct. 3) in a rematch of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Semifinals game last season.  Rockhurst ended the QU 2013 season with a 2-1 win.  The match is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m.
