Quincy Falls at Lincoln in GLVC Opener

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team had no answer for Morris Henderson and the Lincoln running game as the senior tailback ran for 145 yards and a Great Lakes Valley Conference record six touchdowns to lift the Blue Tigers to a 42-13 win over the Hawks on Saturday (Sept. 20) afternoon.

The game served as Quincy's conference opener and the Blue Tigers picked up their first-ever GLVC win.

The Hawks (1-2, 0-1 GLVC) were never able to gain any traction on either side of the ball as the Blue Tigers (1-2, 1-1 GLVC) scored on their first two possessions out of their customary spread offense.

Henderson, who gained 139 yards in the first half, scored on runs of 21 and 17 yards on his first two touchdowns.

The QU defense was able to force a punt on Lincoln's next possession, but Quincy trailed 14-0 after the first quarter.

Meanwhile, the Hawks' offense stalled on its first three possessions as they could not pick up anything on the ground or through the air.

Quincy finally got a spark in the second quarter as Lincoln quarterback Owen Jordan fumbled the ball in his own end zone and freshman Mykal Tuiolosega-Siufanua (Sandy, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) fell on it for the QU touchdown and cut the lead to 14-7.

The Blue Tigers continued to work against the QU defense, though, as Henderson scored three more times in the second quarter to give Lincoln a 35-7 lead going into halftime.

The Quincy offense finally came untracked on the first possession in the third quarter as the Hawks used a solid mix of pass and run to set up a one-yard touchdown run by redshirt-freshman tailback Chris Harris (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin). He has now scored in each of his first three collegiate games.

The Hawks forced a Lincoln punt on the next possession, but the offense could not find the end zone again.

Henderson scored the final touchdown of the game on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 42-13.

Redshirt-junior quarterback Nick Lonergan (Jacksonville, Ill.) was 16-for-25 for 192 yards through the air, but he was sacked six times. Freshman Kody Wood (Jacksonville, Ill.) was his top target, catching five passes for 57 yards. Redshirt-freshman tight end Owen Schoenenberger (Evansville, Wis.) had 77 yards receiving.

Harris finished with 95 yards on the ground on 30 carries for a 3.2 yards-per-carry average. Redshirt-junior Sterling Ross (New Port Richey, Fla./Ridgewood) had 58 yards on the ground on 12 carries.

Senior linebacker Ike Onike (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) finished with 11 tackles (nine solo) to lead the QU defense. Jeremy Rives was credited for 21 tackles (eight solo) to lead Lincoln.

The Hawks return to the field next Saturday (Sept. 27) afternoon for a 1 p.m. kickoff against Haskell Indian Nations. The game will serve as Quincy's Homecoming.
