Lady Hawks Lock Down Bearcats 70-37

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team held Northwest Missouri State University to 37 points and just 10 points in the second half.  The last time QU held an opponent to 37 points was Dec. 17, 2012 against Hannibal-LaGrange University in Pepsi Arena.  The Lady Hawks went on to win that game 84-37.  The QU lock down defense accounted for their 70-37 on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 13) against NWMSU to continue their early season undefeated record in Pepsi Arena (4-0).  

The Lady Hawks (4-4) scored the first points of the game on a fast break layup by Lauren Gronewold after almost three minutes of scoreless basketball.  

The Bearcats (3-7) stayed close and held a one-point lead with 7:15 to play in the first half.  Nia Roth and Carly Bettencourt converted three-point field goals to take a five point lead.  

Tember Schechinger made a Bearcat layup to pull within 34-27 with 30 seconds left in the first half.  It would be the last field goal they would score until the 10:08 mark in the second half.  

The Lady Hawks took a 35-27 lead to halftime.

QU went on a 12-0 run to start the first half before the Bearcats would make a free throw after 6 minutes and 22 seconds ran off the clock in the second half.  The Lady Hawks held the Bearcats without a field goal for 9 minutes and 52 seconds in the second half.  The Bearcats did not score a field goal for 10 minutes and 22 seconds dating back to the first half.  The Lady Hawks were on a 21-1 run before the first Bearcat field goal of the second half.

The Lady Hawk defense would not allow another field goal for seven minutes and 33 seconds.  The Lady Hawks finished off the win 70-37.

The Lady Hawks shot 41% from the floor led by Carly Bettencourt with 11 points.  Lauren Gronewold scored 10 points and led the team with eight rebounds.  Carly Beebe scored nine points off the bench.  Kara Gerbus and Cierra Young both scored eight points.  QU grabbed 40 rebounds and recorded 11 steals.  11 of 12 Lady Hawks scored in the game including Erin Mennemeyer in her first game since the QU Subway Tip-off Classic Tournament this year (Nov. 15).  

The Bearcats shot 31.1% from the floor in the game and 22.2% in the second half.  NWMSU did not ht a three-point field goal attempting 11 of them.  They totaled 22 turnovers and grabbed 33 rebounds.  

The Lady Hawks will play Robert Morris University-Springfield next Saturday (Dec. 20) in Pepsi Arena at 7:30 p.m.
