Hawks Send off Seniors with Five Set Thriller over Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. - The 2014 Quincy University women's volleyball season came to an end in thrilling fashion.  QU gave the raucous Pepsi Arena crowd a five set thrilling come-from-behind finish that gave the Hawks nine wins since the start of October.  The Hawks defeated Maryville University 3-2 to finish the season tied for sixth with MU in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division standings.  

The Hawks (11-18, 6-12 GLVC) sent off four seniors who have made a huge impact on the women's volleyball program.  Sommer Holder finished the match with 23 digs to finish the season averaging 5.12 digs per set.  Her digs per set average shattered the school single season record set in 1994.  Holder also ranks fourth in school history with 1,427 career digs.  

Samantha Haegele finished her Hawks career with a double-double recording 12 kills and 21 digs.  Haegele had 788 career kills and 957 career digs.

Briann Joslin was dominant in the Hawk win with 12 kills and a .400 hitting percentage.  Joslin finished her career with 1,122 career kills and 369 blocks.  Her career block total moves the senior into second in QU-history.

Carly Schmitt added five kills to her career total to finish with 851 kills in four years.  Schmitt also had 172 career blocks.

The Saints (15-14, 6-12 GLVC) were out to spoil senior day 10 of 12 points late in the first set to take a 21-17 lead.  The Saints went on to win the first set 25-20.

The Hawks fell behind 7-4 early.  QU battled back and went on a four-point run to take an 18-15 lead.  Maryville eventually tied the match at 20-20.  With the match tied at 22-22, Bekah Raebel slammed two kills and Jessica Licurgo ended the set with an ace to tie the match at 1-1.

The Saints took a 17-13 lead in the third set, but the Hawks answered with four points to pull even at 17 all.  The Hawks took a 24-22 lead and the Saints scored one point to force a QU timeout.  Out of the timeout, the Saints scored three points on Hawk attacking errors to win set three 26-24.

The Hawks were hot out of the gate in the fourth set.  QU scored five straight points to take a 7-2 lead and force an early Saints timeout.  QU jumped ahead 13-5 after another four-point run to force the Saints to use their final timeout.  The Saints came out of the timeout to score four points in a row, but the Hawks eventually coasted to a 25-16 fourth set win to tie the match at 2-2 and force a decisive fifth set.

The Hawks trailed 9-6 in the final set before they started to chip away two points at a time.  Samantha Haegele had three kills in a 7-2 run that gave the Hawks a 13-11 lead.  After a Maryville point, Bekah Raebel pounded a kill to take a 14-12 lead.  The Saints inched closer with another point, but Bekah Raebel ended the threat with another kill to win the set and the match.

Samantha Haegele led the Hawks with 13 kills and added 21 digs for her eighth double-double of the season.  Briann Joslin recorded 12 kills and Bekah Raebel added 11 kills for the Hawks.  Jessica Licurgo finished with nine kills and five blocks.  Sommer Holder led the team with 23 digs.  Miranda Rodriguez finished with 31 assists and 14 digs for her ninth double-double and fifth in a row.  Cassandra Cahill had 27 assists for QU.
