Truman Snaps Quincy's 4-Game Winning Streak, 17-14

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Quincy University football team put together a solid performance, but Truman State put together the game-winning drive in the fourth quarter to defeat the Hawks, 17-14, in Kirksville, Mo. on Saturday (Nov. 8) afternoon.

The loss snaps Quincy's winning streak at four games, but the Hawks (6-4, 4-3 GLVC) still have a chance to go for their seventh win of the season in the finale against McKendree next Saturday (Nov. 15) at Flinn Stadium.

The Hawks trailed, 14-0, after Truman (6-3, 5-2 GLVC) sprung two big plays on back-to-back possessions in the second quarter. Garrett White came around left end for a 75-yard run to open the scoring with 8:31 left in the second quarter and Jared Haferbier got past the QU defense on a 63-yard touchdown catch-and-run pass just two minutes later.

Quincy was able to gather itself after that play and put together a methodical 15-play, 76-yard drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown pass from redshirt-junior quarterback Nick Lonergan (Jacksonville, Ill.) to redshirt-freshman tight end Owen Schoenenberger (Evansville, Wis.) on third-and-10. The touchdown cut the deficit in half, 14-7, with 23 seconds left in the half.

Three plays before that, Lonergan kept a play alive by absorbing a hit while managing to underhand a forward pass to Schoenenberger for a 20-yard gain that set up the Hawks in the red zone.

The Hawks got good field position in the second half after redshirt-junior punter Greg Huckstep (Mendon, Ill./Unity) boomed a 66-yard punt to the Truman 13-yard line. The defense then forced a three-and-out to set up the offense at midfield.

Redshirt-freshman Chris Harris (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart-Griffin) converted on a fourth-and-1 before Lonergan hit freshman receiver Kody Wood (Jacksonville, Ill.) on a 21-yard pass over the middle.

Lonergan then scampered away from pressure and scooted 21 yards to set up inside the TSU 1-yard line where Harris bullied his way over the goal line for the game-tying touchdown. It was Harris' 16th rushing touchdown of the season, setting the school's all-time single-season record by surpassing Rob Munson, who had 15 scores in 1993 and 1994.

The teams traded stops until the fourth quarter as Truman marched down the field on a 13-play, 54-yard drive that stalled at the Quincy 6-yard line before Roger Howard connected on a 23-yard field goal with 5:04 to go.

The Hawks picked up a first down on its next possession, but Lonergan was sacked three straight times on the next series to force a punt. The Bulldogs gained a first down that sealed the game after Quincy used its timeouts.

The Bulldogs outgained Quincy, 299-287, but the Hawks had a 19-10 edge in first downs as the defense allowed just 161 yards outside the two big-play touchdowns. Quincy also had an advantage in time of possession, 36:30 - 23:30.

The Hawks struggled to get their running game going, rushing for 96 total yards (including seven sacks for the Truman defense). Junior running back Dante Flowers (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) led the Hawks with 29 yards on 11 carries. Lonergan gained 57 yards when taking out the sacks.

Through the air, Lonergan was efficient, going 19-for-25 for 191 yards and a touchdown. He did not throw an interception. Schoenenberger caught five passes for 67 yards and sophomore receiver Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick) caught four passes for 39 yards.

White finished with 103 rushing yards, picking up 75 on the touchdown run. He was dangerous in the pass game, though, catching five passes for 61 yards. Truman backup quarterback Zach Tobin did a nice job managing the game for the 'Dogs with starter Devonte Black exiting after a sack by redshirt-sophomore defensive end Tanner Day (O'Fallon, Mo./Fort Zumwalt West) on Truman's first drive of the game. Tobin was 15-for-19 for 160 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Hawks were led by redshirt-sophomore Darius Carey (Florissant, Mo./CBC), who totaled eight tackles. Senior linebackers Dan Camp (Rochester, Ill.) and Ike Onike (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) had seven stops apiece with Camp moving into third on QU's all-time tackles list.

The Hawks return to Flinn Stadium for their final game of the 2014 season as they take on rival McKendree at 1 p.m. Quincy will celebrate Senior Day in a pregame ceremony and the Hawks welcome all youth football players to the game. All kids in their football jerseys will be admitted free of charge with a parent.
