Jordan Roberts' Late Goal Keeps No. 10 Hawks Unbeaten with Tie at William Jewell

LIBERTY, Mo. - The No. 10 Quincy University men's soccer team survived a scare against William Jewell College on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 5) thanks to a late goal by Jordan Roberts.  WJC scored in the fifth minute to put QU behind early.  Roberts scored the equalizer in the 89th minute to knot the game at 1-1.  After two periods of overtime, the game ended in a tie.  The Hawks took 22 shots and put nine on goal.  The Cardinals fired nine shots with four on goal.  QU took 16 shots after halftime while WJC had four shots in the second half and overtime.

Drew Duncan (10-0-1) was called into action early with a save in the fifth minute, but William Jewell (2-6-3, 1-4-3 GLVC) sent another shot from the top of the box into the back of the net by Trevor Pentola.

The No. 10 Hawks (10-0-1, 7-0-1 GLVC) took six shots in the first half with three on goal.  The Cardinals keeper, Shane Van Hooser, stopped them all to send WJC to halftime with a 1-0 lead.

The Hawks came out firing in the second half with a few chances and two shots in the first 10 minutes of the second period.  QU took 12 shots with six on goal in the second half alone.

Shane Van Hooser was up to the challenge stopping the first four shots he faced in the second half.  QU was running out of time in the 88th minute when Steve McAnany set up for a corner kick.  McAnany found Scott Ladi for a header that was saved by Van Hooser.  Jordan Roberts gathered the ball in the 89th minute on the left wing.  Roberts made a move toward the center of the field and fired a low shot from 25 yards out that found the net for the equalizer and his 11th goal of the season.

The Hawks took six shots with three on goal in the final 10 minutes of the second half.  William Jewell did not record a shot during that time.

The game went to overtime tied at 1-1.  Taylor Reis took the lone shot of the first overtime, but it went wide and the game needed another 10 minute overtime.

In the second overtime period, Xhovani Dokaj received a red card in the 105th minute to send the Hawks down a man for the final five minutes of the game.  Drew Duncan was called on in the 108th minute and was up to the challenge with his third save of the afternoon.

The Hawks applied pressure late as Jordan Roberts took a shot that was blocked to force a corner kick.  Steve McAnany sent the corner in during the final minute of play, but Sam Kluba's shot went over the cross bar to end the game in a 1-1 tie.

The Hawks have scored 30 goals this season with 23 of them coming in the second half or later.

No. 10 QU will play host to the University of Indianapolis on Friday night (Oct. 10).  The start time at Legends Stadium is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
