Quincy Hangs Tough, Falls To UIndy

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University football team kept it close against Great Lakes Valley Conference foe Indianapolis on Saturday (Oct. 4) night at Flinn Stadium, but could not get stops when it needed them as the two-time defending conference champion came away with a 42-20 win.

The Hawks (2-3, 0-2 GLVC) trailed the Greyhounds (4-1, 2-0 GLVC), 21-0, after 20 minutes of game time, but played even with UIndy for the remainder of the game.

On the first play of the fourth quarter, redshirt-junior quarterback Nick Lonergan (Jacksonville, Ill.) connected with freshman wideout Ryan Finders (St. Charles, Mo./St. Charles West) on a 29-yard touchdown pass to cut UIndy's lead to 35-20.

The Hawks had the Greyhounds backed up to 3rd-and-16 on its own 31-yard line on the next series, but Connor Barthel hit Logan Young down the left sideline for a 44-yard completion to move into QU territory. Matt Ripp scampered in from 25 yards on the next play to take the wind out of QU's sails and stretch the lead back to three touchdowns.

The first 20 minutes of the game belonged to the Greyhounds. Barthel found Reece Horn for three touchdown passes – the last one for 51 yards to give Indianapolis a 21-0 lead. Horn finished with 10 catches for 197 yards and three touchdowns.

Quincy's special teams were terrific on Saturday and reigning GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week Eric Poindexter (Newport News, Va./Warwick/Monroe College) set up the Hawks deep in UIndy territory after a 38-yard punt return. On 4th-and-1 from the 13-yard line Poindexter hauled in a touchdown pass from Lonergan to cut Indy's lead to 21-6 heading into halftime.

The Hawks averaged 23.9 yards per kick return and held the Greyhounds to just 15 yards per kick return. Quincy's average drive start was its own 37-yard line.

The Greyhounds made it 28-6 on Barthel's 4-yard touchdown to Matt Sinclair on the first possession of the second half.

Quincy responded with its own drive – 10-play, 69-yard march – to cut the lead back to 28-13. Poindexter caught a 24-yard pass to start the drive and Lonergan found redshirt-freshman tight end Owen Schoenenberger (Evansville, Wis.) for a 14-yard completion on 4th-and-12 to extend the drive. Junior running back Dante Flowers (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) finished the drive with a 7-yard touchdown run.

The Hawks were 4-for-8 on fourth downs and 3-for-15 on third downs.

The Greyhounds followed that by chewing seven minutes off the clock by moving 89 yards on 16 plays. Andrew Walker capped the possession with a 17-yard touchdown run to make it 35-13. UIndy kept the drive going by converting two third downs and a fourth down. The 'Hounds were 8-for-12 on third downs in the game.

Flowers returned the ensuing kickoff 40 yards to near midfield and a sideline interference penalty moved the Hawks into UIndy territory. Two plays later, Lonergan hit Finders for the score.

That would be Quincy's last score as the Greyhounds made it a three-touchdown game on their next possession and the Hawks went four-and-out. The Hawks moved inside the UIndy 5-yard line in the final minutes, but could not punch it in.

The Greyhounds out-gained the Hawks, 444-311, including a 139-88 advantage on the ground.

As a team, the Hawks could not find the holes to get the running game going. Flowers led the rushing attack with 50 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Flowers also averaged 25.5 yards per kick return and finished with 203 all-purpose yards. Redshirt-freshman Chris Harris (Springfield, Ill./Sacred Heart Griffin) ran it 19 times for 45 yards.

Lonergan was 16-for-26 for 223 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. He was sacked five times and lost a fumble for the only turnover of the game by either team. Poindexter showed himself as a deep threat, catching seven passes for 133 yards and a score.

Ripp led the ground attack for the Greyhounds with 67 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Walker had 51 yards on 14 rushes. Barthel finished 20-for-27 for 305 yards and four touchdowns.

Senior linebacker Dan Camp (Rochester, Ill.) led the QU defense with nine tackles and had the Hawks' lone sack. Rob Dury had 19 tackles (12 solo) to lead the Greyhounds.

The Hawks will finish their three-game homestand next Saturday (Oct. 11) when they play host to Southwest Baptist for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
